Day in Impeachment: Senate issues a summons to President Trump
Source: NY Times
The Senate opened only the third presidential impeachment trial in history, swearing in the chief justice of the United States, John G. Roberts Jr., as the presiding officer as senators took an oath to render "impartial justice." Senators then signed a book signifying that they had taken the vow.
The Senate issued a formal summons for President Trump, informing him of the charges and inviting him to respond by Saturday evening. Senators set a series of deadlines for Mr. Trump's team and the House managers, and adjourned the trial for a long weekend. Behind closed doors, Senator Mitch McConnell and his aides were working to finish a resolution that would establish the contours of the first phase of the trial.
Representative Adam B. Schiff, the lead House impeachment manager, read the articles of impeachment against Mr. Trump aloud in the Senate chamber, laying out the case against him. Here are the key moments so far today.

McConnell also said Thursday that a summons would be issued to Trump and the president would have until 6 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday to respond. The White House received the summons Thursday night, according to NBC News.
If the House wants to file a trial brief, it should do so by 5 p.m. Eastern on Saturday, McConnell also said. If Trumps team wants to file a trial brief, it has until noon on Monday, and the House then would have until noon Tuesday to file a rebuttal.
The impeachment trial looks likely to still be underway on Feb. 4, when Trump has been scheduled to deliver the annual State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress. It also appears on track to hamper the election campaigns of four Democratic senators who are running to be their partys presidential nominee, keeping Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Amy Klobuchar and Michael Bennet away from Iowa ahead of the states first-in-the-nation caucuses on Feb. 3.

(43,127 posts)I expect Moscow Mitch & Co. to rally round "the charges don't rise to the level of impeachment" in their acquittal. Ernst already stated "moot" for the delay of funds to Ukraine, which is sort of similar.
I hope our guys hit this with all the thunder they can muster, including seeking recusal for Republicans who have prejudged (which might get a few of our own tossed as well), and bench warrants for Bolton & Mulvaney.
I see little risk in calling Biden, both father and son. Clearing the fog Trump has tried to create around them will be nothing but beneficial all the way to election day.
Most troubling is the fall of the rule of law. Trump could do anything. Nationalize all houses and savings accounts, and Republicans would support him.

(36,766 posts)Trump and team are deathly afraid of him testifying under oath.
A perjury trap is impossible if you tell the truth.
They have reason to be afraid.
