Benedict XVI and Cardinal Sarah coauthor book on celibacy, opposing the ordination of married men

Source: The American Magazine

In a move that has stunned many in Rome and is sure to give rise to serious questions far beyond the theme of the book, the emeritus pope Benedict XVI, who will be 93 in April, and Cardinal Robert Sarah, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, have coauthored a book defending celibacy for priests of the Latin Rite church and expressing their total opposition to the ordination of married men, which was one of the recommendations approved by last October’s Synod for the Pan-Amazonian region. They perceive this opening to the ordination of married men as a great danger to the church.

The authors present themselves “as bishops” in “filial obedience to Pope Francis” who “seek the truth” in “a spirit of love of the unity of the church,” far from “the ideologies that divide” and far from “political maneuvers or power games or ideological manipulations.”

They said it is not possible “to keep quiet” after “the strange synod of the media.”

“We cannot remain silent,” they said, quoting St. Augustine.

The arch conservatives in the Catholic Church (like those at EWTN) are going to use him as a kind of anti-Pope as long as he's alive

I'm sure that Francis would have reinstated him as a cardinal, which would have been simply honorary at his age. He then should have retired to Bavaria. And kept his mouth shut.

Such utter agitprop nonsense. This shows simply and completely that priests, Roman or not, claim to speak for deity while advancing their power agenda. Btw, I seem to recall that the Roman church allows Episcopal priests that are married and that convert to say mass. Perhaps I am wrong about that. I also recall that Eastern rite priests can be married as well.

the Orthodox view is that if you're married, stay married; if not married, don't seek a wife. So if you're ordained married, you stay married; if you're single, you're celibate--that's not supposed to change.

influence other people's kids, they already do a lot of damage, so if a so called god exists and he/she was responsible for it, big mistake god! Maybe a sign that god is just an invention of man?

Lust for accumulation of wealth by the church. Married clergy generate offspring who inherit land and wealth. Unmarried clergy leave everything to the church. There's also the possibility of bishops & cardinals - perhaps even pope - becoming hereditary titles. Celibate clergy avoids all that.

After all, lands and properties acquired by clergymen are not their actual property, they come from donations and thus are not personal belonging but instead are belongings to the church which in turn have accumulated obscene amounts of money.

The best solution is to close all religions.

many women hear the calling for the priesthood and it's disgusting for the patriarchy to think that's somehow less authentic than for men. There is a shortage of priests in many areas.

Oh well, the protestants have women and married pastors, so they might be on to something.

And they should be allowed to get married.

Or alternatively, they can keep up their decades long whining about lack of 'vocations' among Catholics, and about how there aren't enough ordained clergy to serve the faithful.

Why do people still believe in religion? I don't understand it. The worst part is they treat priests like if they were semi-gods, leave their kids at their care and then they are abused. Of course that not all priests are pedophiles, but a good number of them are either pedophiles or gay and the only way to end that is by allowing them to marry, or better yet, close all religions.

There are 6 Rites in the RC church. Alexandrian, Armenian, Byzantine, East Syriac, Latin, West Syriac. Particular churches within the 6 rites are declared to be 'sui iuris', the pope has the final say, but the churches in the different rites have their own hierarchies with authority over the particulars of their faith and structure of the church, internally.

I can't link it with this computer, but the wiki heading is 'Catholic_particular_churches_and_liturgical_rites'.

Clerical celibacy is not strictly required for Maronite priests outside of North America. Due to a long term understanding with their Latin counterparts in North America, Maronite priests in that area have traditionally remained celibate.
