Koch Group Kicks Off Massive Voter Mobilization Effort; Summons Tea Party to Country Club, Outs...

Source: The Nation

full headline -- Koch Group Kicks Off Massive Voter Mobilization Effort; Summons Tea Party to Country Club, Outsourcing Center

Its “National Prosperity Action Day.” Tea Partiers, Republican volunteers and conservative activists are being summoned by Americans for Prosperity—the group founded and financed by several large corporations, and led by the billionaire Koch brothers—to begin mobilizing to defeat President Obama and Congressional Democrats...

...Its the beginning of an extremely well-planned get-out-the-vote effort that duplicates what an entire national party would attempt. And its been four years in the making.

...Koch’s unique, outside-the-GOP voter mobilizing system is called Themis, named after the Greek god of divine order. It carries a similar name to the Themis project by the US Chamber of Commerce’s partners exposed for planning to hack and sabatoge liberals and some union groups, but it is not related.

...Too much attention is given to the television ads. The Koch network, which is actively training Tea Partiers, via a partnership with True the Vote, to harass and intimidate voters, may tip the scales in this election. And you won’t see their work on television, or through FEC disclosures (they refuse to register their grassroots electioneering as independent expenditures). Like Wisconsin, liberals might see the ground shifting beneath them, and wonder what happened.

That said, voter intimidation should be prosecuted in my opinion. One thing these last couple of election cycles has taught me is there is a whole bunch of crap that needs to STOP. And now. I sure hope it's on the top of Madame Pelosi's to-do list, right there with putting an end to Citizen's United. Some of this stuff needs to be either done thru amendment, or otherwise codified into law.

then vote for Obama, if you care about this country and your family. Use their money to register as many people as you can. Affiliation does not matter in a general election. Let's call their bluff. Turn the table. Play by their rules...and lie to them for a change.

I just posted a thread about early voting, and helping the seniors, the disabled, and those without transportation. In Indiana early voting begins Oct. 8. I'm glad I wont be involved on election day this year. And I hope Madame Pelosi will take up voter intimidation along with the repeal of Citizens United. It should actually be a crime, with the most severe penalties, as it is a direct assault on our democracy.

If the Dems take over the Congress and they pass a law outlawing Citizens United, it would be immediately challenged in court and struck down in violation of the CU precedent. They may be able to pass and keep disclosure provisions and maybe a few other modifications, but they can't outlaw CU outright. If they passed such a law, it would be immediately challenged at struck down by the SCOTUS. All we can hope for is for a right wing justice to retire so Obama can appoint another progressive, the we can reverse CU. Changing the constitution is another way, but the red states won't do and we would need a congressional supermajority. Ain't gonna happen. This is why we MUST re-elected Obama and hope a right winger like Scalia retires. On voter suppression, there are all kinds of cases where outright suppression like phone jamming, fake calls, etc. HAVE been prosecuted. Look them up. Dems need to have MANY good poll watchers and lawyers on the ground to make sure irregularities are reported and documented.

I'm not a lawyer, but I am guessing thru amendment, so you are probably right on the money about the red states. I am all for Scalia retiring, but not sure he's in any mood to. It sure would be nice if he would though, I'm all for Obama getting the opportunity to appoint to SCOTUS again (I'd really like to see him get a couple more). Re: voter suppression, I was actually thinking in more general terms, as in the intimidation factor (real or perceived). If Koch/Tea Party tries anything, I want them to pay a stern price for that nonsense. Thanks for the comments/disucssion.

This is not some story about what happened somewhere else, I was the Democrat Precinct Chair in 2010, and as such was observing the "no go beyond" line at our voting place. Six or seven guys (and one lady) where standing beyond the line waving cameras at some of the latino voters, calling out that their pictures will be sent to DHS and the "rinches." Buttons and signs indicated Tea Party/GOP affiliation. I was getting ready to call the county party HQ when a friend of mine, a local rancher, hauled up in his "work" truck.

Two things I should point out. This man was not a latino ranch worker, he is an owner who works his ranch. He is also the great great.... grandson of Juan Seguin. One of the Texicans who fought with Houston and all them guys against Mexico. He also does not suffer fools very nicely. His response was rather profanely and filled with historical allusions, a few accusations of his own about their not being native Texans, and much less probably not from this precinct (small, we damn near don't need voter ID, we just ask how the kids are doing."

They left. When he continued in to vote, even some of our Repubs gave him a hand.

Sometime life is more amusing that apocryphal stories.

I seem to remember the opinion polls showing a clear Walker win for the last few months prior to recall day. There was no surprise, just disappointment that it went as expected. Indeed, I think the other results that day made it a minor loss for the GOKochs.

And Nate gave him a 95% chance of winning. So, this presidential election is different then Walker's recall.

The only way RepubliCONS can pull this one off is if they get the Dancing Supremes to vote him in. But I wonder if Americans would let the fools on the supreme court decide another presidential election for We The People.

24. From the OP article re: Wisconsin...
Sun Sep 23, 2012, 02:06 PM

...In 2009, the Koch network created a model called the Wisconsin Prosperity Project to move the state to the far right. After witnessing the Democrats’ stunning 2008 ground game, the operatives in Wisconsin were determined to out-organize liberals. They hired Tea Party organizers, invested heavily in front groups (like the MacIver Center), ran constant advertising and coordinated with employers to hold propaganda meetings with workers. Tea Party bus tours in the state, fully financed by AFP, were “designed” to help elect Republicans.

And in 2010, Wisconsin turned harder to the right than almost any other state in the nation during the midterm elections. At least from the Koch perspective, the investments worked. (The Koch theory of change was also reinforced by the savvy Scott Walker recall campaign, in which Koch operatives bused seventy-five canvassers to the state to out-perform the unions...)

Koch is now financing more than 200 organizers and paid political staff in thirty-one states. Its likely much of the money Koch now donates to the NRA and groups like the Faith and Freedom Coalition (run by Tim Phillip’s longtime business partner, Ralph Reed), will also be spent on organizers on the ground. Using the Wisconsin model, Koch hopes to partner with local conservative groups to build a rapid mobilization system that can compete on Election Day, in every critical state.

"by the US Chamber of Commerce’s partners exposed for planning to hack and sabotage liberals and some union groups, but it is not related."

That doesn't seem very prudent of them. I'd also guess that they have never read any Greek mythology, and the fact that most (if not all) of the gods and titans were dualistic in nature. Whatever positives they found in the definition of Themis will also include negatives, or aspects contrary to the primary ones. Such as:

http://www.theoi.com/Titan/TitanisThemis.html
Themis was the Titan goddess of divine law and order--the traditional rules of conduct first established by the gods. She was also a prophetic goddess who presided over the most ancient oracles, including Delphoi. In this role, she was the divine voice (themistes) who first instructed mankind in the primal laws of justice and morality, such as the precepts of piety, the rules of hospitality, good governance, conduct of assembly, and pious offerings to the gods. In Greek, the word themis referred to divine law, those rules of conduct long established by custom. Unlike the word nomos, the term was not usually used to describe laws of human decree.

I) THE PROPHECY OF THE FALL OF THE TITANES

Aeschylus, Prometheus Bound 206 ff (trans. Weir Smyth) (Greek tragedy C5th B.C.) :
"I {Prometheus}, although advising them for the best, was unable to persuade the Titanes, children of Ouranos (Heaven) and Khthon (Earth); but they, disdaining counsels of craft, in the pride of their strength thought to gain the mastery without a struggle and by force. Often my mother Themis, or Gaia (Earth) (though one form, she had many names), had foretold to me the way in which the future was fated to come to pass. That it was not by brute strength nor through violence, but by guile that those who should gain the upper hand were destined to prevail. And though I argued all this to them, they did not pay any attention to my words."

I can see the Koch brothers thinking of themselves as modern day Titans, thus my inclusion of the prophecy

I also can't believe the average bible-thumping teabagger would go along with having a Greek God overseeing their gatherings. Then again, I wouldn't expect them to read about the Greeks, either
