Cuomo says New York's 'miscellaneous' tipped workers getting a raise
Source: NY Daily News
ALBANY New York has reached a tipping point when it comes to minimum wage.
Gov. Cuomo announced Tuesday that the state will no longer allow certain tipped workers to be paid less than minimum wage in an effort to combat wage theft and harassment in industries where employees are predominantly women and minorities.
The order from the Department of Labor will eliminate the so-called sub-minimum wage for miscellaneous industries statewide over the next year and will impact more than 70,000 New Yorkers.
Car wash workers, nail salon employees, hairdressers, aestheticians, valet parking attendants, door-persons, tow truck drivers, dog groomers and tour guides will all be covered by the new rule.
In New York, we believe in a fair days pay for a fair days work," Cuomo said. But after an exhaustive investigation conducted by the Department of Labor, its clear the tip system in many situations is needlessly complicated, allowing unscrupulous businesses to flout our nation-leading minimum wage laws and robbing workers of the paycheck they earned. That ends now. ?

(14,697 posts)MA has a two tier model, though they just raised the tipped min wage to $4.75. I think the plan is to bring it up to the fed min wage by 2023. At that point, the MA min wage will be $15.

(11,901 posts)Most people understand that tips are a part of compensation. People don't ordinarily tip self service gas station attendants, fast food cashiers and convenience store clerks.
If typically tipped employees receive the same wages as non tipped employees, I would think that people will stop providing tips.
