House passes bill meant to restore Voting Rights Act

Source: The Hill

The House on Friday passed a Democrat-led bill aimed at restoring a provision of the Voting Rights Act that would require certain jurisdictions to obtain preclearance from the federal government before implementing any changes to voting practices.

The bill, which passed 228-187 and was spearheaded by Rep. Terri Sewell (D-Ala.), includes language that would put criteria in place to determine “which States and political subdivisions” would have to seek federal approval in an attempt to crack down on voter suppression.

The bill looks to broaden the criteria in which courts can “retain the authority to preclear voting changes” and “the Department of Justice may assign election observers” in addition to requiring the jurisdictions to notify the public of any changes to voting practices.

Democrats praised the bill, arguing it’s necessary to reverse the Supreme Court’s 2013 Shelby County v. Holder decision and ensure access to fair voting.

bizarre. Earlier this year I saw him as a decent Republican standing up to other repulsive Republicans regarding immigration. Unfortunately that all changed a couple of weeks ago during the impeachment testimony.

Apparently voting rights interfere with their ability to steal elections.

We have a very good chance of picking up a few seats, we need three if we elect a Democratic president, 4 otherwise.

Obama had a sliver of opportunity, if he had had the Blue Dogs behind him. But if and when Democrats once again gain all three branches, I hope they do not follow their usual MO of showing their cards to the GOP BEFORE they negotiate. In fact NO NEGOTIATION. I hope they just pass an omnibus bill that includes all their 200+ bills backed up in the Senate. And then not stop there! Continue on with Medicare for All, maternity leave, etc..

Take a page out of the Repubicans playbook. Deluge them and Fox News etc with too much to complain about at once. And while they are complaining about, say, reversing the practice of jailing children, Democrats pass some other shocking bill (to them)
