The interior minister of Bolivias rightwing interim government has vowed to jail the former president Evo Morales for the rest of his life, accusing the exiled leftist of inciting anti-government protests that he claimed amounted to terrorism.
In an interview with the Guardian, Arturo Murillo claimed Morales had been orchestrating efforts to strangle Bolivian cities by ordering followers to erect roadblocks that would starve its residents of fuel and food.
Murillo claimed that an audio recording which supposedly shows Morales giving such instructions was definitive proof of the alleged crime and said he was 200% certain it was genuine.
. . .
With Morales thousands of miles away, Bolivias new governors have launched a propaganda campaign aimed at annihilating the leftists reputation and legacy. Adverts on Bolivian television depict the countrys first indigenous leader as a chaos-sowing provocateur who has brought turmoil to its streets.

(21,600 posts)Their idea of politics is very much a combination of McCarthy and Torquemada.
We've seen this during the numerous dictatorships in the continent since the 1950s, as well as more recently with Lula da Silva's framing in Brazil (which led to his being jailed, thus paving the way for Bolsonaro's election), Jorge Glas' framing in Ecuador, and Cristina Kirchner's framing in Argentina (where the ploy basically failed).
The lesson for the GOPee would be that using lawfare to frame your opponents, knowing you can't beat them fair and square, eventually backfires.
But of course, when do Rethugs ever learn valuable lessons - least of all these Narco Rubio types.

Hard luck for Mr Morales, though.

(14,164 posts)Morales made some mistakes. But he was 1000x better than who is in there now. Especially for the poor and lower middle classes there.

(8,755 posts)Time for the international community to look at crimes against Evo Morales and crimes against the democratic interests of the peoples of Bolivia, especially the indigenous survivors of European genocide and colonialism. What happened in the United States is a much closer in time and an ongoing event in Bolivia.
The long beleaguered poor of Bolivia cry alone against neoliberalism as the UN and OAS will stand down in any meaningful fashion and thus support the conservative coup. Imagine the lies that are not catapulted in the media.
