Katie Hill 'leaving now because of a double standard,' she says in final House floor remarks

Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) Democratic Rep. Katie Hill of California, who announced her plans to resign from her congressional seat earlier this week, gave her final speech on the floor of the House of Representatives on Thursday, where she apologized to her supporters but said the forces that led her to leave Congress are larger than she is.

"I will never shirk my responsibility for this sudden ending to my time here," Hill said, "but I have to say more because this is bigger than me."
She went on to say, "I am leaving now because of a double standard. I am leaving because I no longer want to be used as a bargaining chip. I am leaving because I didn't want to be peddled by papers and blogs and websites, used by shameless operatives for the dirtiest gutter politics that I've ever seen."

Earlier this month, a conservative blog released intimate photos of Hill alleging she and her husband had a separate relationship with an unnamed female campaign staffer. That report included three photos of the congresswoman, including an explicit photo.

Hate to see her leave, dammit! There's something wrong when she's forced to resign and that slime is still in the white house.

A VERY powerful statement:

How many Republican men are still serving after their affairs have come to light?

With Democrats holding their elected representatives to a higher standard than Republicans do. I’m sorry, Hill was plain dumb, and seems to have a sense of entitlement that is ill-deserved. What she does in her private life and in her bedroom is none of my business. But what she does in a public workplace and in the context of a political campaign relying on public contributions most certainly is. If you are angry, be angry at Hill When people are put to get you, you don’t hand them ammunition.

...but she has the responsibility not to violate ethics rules regarding relationships with subordinates. "Republicans do it too" isn't an excuse.

and avoided an investigation by resigning.

I think both she and Franken should have refused to resign, if they were wrongly accused

Katie Hill is a victim of a conservative hit job - and she has to resign while that fucking monster sits atop the throne. Something is very foul here.

relationships with staffers.

It would only be a double standard if others had violated these rules without then being subject to investigation.

And it's disgusting.

There are so many double standards in so many ways. . . There are the subtle things like the movies. . . We see an 80-year-old man with a 45-year-old girlfriend. . . . We're supposed to just take in stride. . . That's how it is. . .

But when it's the other way. . . An older woman with a younger man. . . Think of "The Graduate"-- yeah-- ha ha-- funny. . .

The same thing goes with sex. . . . Men do it and they are studs. Women do it and they are whores. . . Please excuse my language as am just trying to make a point. We are STILL at this juncture even at the end of 2019.

I can't say anything about the details regarding her subordinates, as I don't know. But I wonder if this would be happening if it were a man?

It really is disheartening.
