Nationals win first World Series title, storming back on Astros in Game 7, 6-2

Source: Washington Post

Suddenly, it was all over, and the blue-jerseyed visitors were spilling and screaming out of every corner of Minute Maid Park — from their dugout along the third base line, the bullpen in left field, the expanse of outfield, all four corners of the diamond — and converging upon the joyous pile of humanity forming near the center. Once the Washington Nationals had no more giant mountains to climb, they took the small dirt hill of the pitcher’s mound, and they hugged and bounced.

With one more comeback win, at the end of a comeback season for the ages, the Nationals were World Series champions. A 6-2 victory over the Houston Astros in Game 7 on Wednesday night sealed it, delivering the first baseball title for the nation’s capital since Walter Johnson’s Senators won their only one in 1924.

Having existed for the better part of five months as a decided underdog — their odds of winning the World Series back on May 24, when they were 19-31, were 1.5 percent — the Nationals had come to live for the daily fight for their lives. And now, the fight was over.

Seventh-inning home runs by Anthony Rendon and Howie Kendrick, the former an MVP-caliber third baseman possibly playing his last game in a Nationals uniform, the latter a 36-year-old veteran in the deepest autumn of his career, turned a slim deficit into a slim lead for the Nationals. A tacked-on run in the eighth and two more in the ninth provided some breathing room.

Thanks to Rorey for posting the image .

This is him. He looks to be in severe pain and agony and I feel nothing for him. He has made us all suffer with his greed. By his order he has caged babies, separated families and they are lost now because of the inept asses that he hired to run the agencies. He has shat on our Constitution and our flag.

Sure, anyone could get their feelings hurt, but wouldn't show it, probably smiling their way through it.

The narcissist can't bear it. It crushes him, and it shows with his pained expression.

and I have no idea how many people watched but if its like most sporting events, there were probably less eye balls on the TV than in years past.

in a totally-not-meaningful-of-anything-but-interesting-nonetheless sort of way, that the road team won every single game in a full seven-game series.

Nobody won a game for their hometown fans, who were all paying $500+ per ticket to see them win.

I was glad to see the game turn around for the Nationals in the 7th inning. Up to that point Zack Greinke pitched brilliantly for the Astros. But he gave up a home run in the 7th and he got pulled, and everything unraveled for the Astros.

The San Diego Padres, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Tampa Bay Rays, and Milwaukee Brewers have never won a won a World Series either.

The Padres played in the World Series in 1984 and 1998. The Rockies played in the 2007 World Series. The Rangers played in the 2010 and 2011 World Series. The Rays played in the 2008 World Series. And the Brewers were the AL team in the 1982 World Series, but have since switched to the NL.

The Mariners were heavily favored in 2001, as I am guessing you know, but wound up losing to the Yankees in the ALCS.

I goofed...

I'll never forget the post-season in 1995. The M's came so close to winning the pennant. I was doing a play at the time, and I remember everyone backstage with a radio to their ear, trying to catch the ends of pivotal games. And then the sudden let-down at the end...

Share the wealth!

I'm an Astros fan and I could not watch. All is forgiven for those wonderful Nats fans booing the Pres and chanting "Lock Him Up!" I have a feeling that the Houston crowd would not have done that.

Goodbye Cole.

Congrats to the Nats!
