New CNN hire Sean Duffy launched an extraordinary attack on Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, saying the fact he was born in Ukraine may have been a factor in his decision to report concerns about President Trumps July telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The former Wisconsin GOP congressman appeared on CNNs New Day hours before Vindman is set to become the first sitting White House official to testify in the impeachment inquiry into Trumps dealings with Ukraine. Vindman is the top Ukraine expert on the National Security Council and is expected to tell House investigators that he was so alarmed by what he heard on Trumps call to Zelensky that he felt obliged to reported it to one of his superiors.
Vindmanand his twin, who also works for the NSCwas born in Ukraine but left for the U.S. when they were 3 years old, according to a profile of him published by The New York Times on Tuesday. That fact raised alarmed for Duffy, who appears to have doubts over whether Vindman had Americas best interests in mind when reporting the call....................................

(1,242 posts)Entertainment tonight episodes from the 80's/90's has more news. Cable news is worse than a waste of time - even MSNBC. With Scarborough for several hours, Andrea Mitchell and the rest - it is a corporate liberal passifier. Even Rachel Maddow is not allowed to cover what she wants to. Bless her for her patience. Richard Murdoch of Fox should be in jail.
It is a waste of time because there are much better media outlets to get information. During the presidential election each cable news outlet spent entire mornings waiting for Donald Trump to emerge from a building to watch him get into a car to be whisked away, while crawls at the bottom of the screen showed bits about Hillary's email BS, as if there was any news to them.

(41,832 posts)Why does he think Vindman was chosen to work with Ukraine? He is fluent in Russian, Ukrainian, and English. He was an obvious choice.

(47,260 posts)Is CNN trying to be Fox Lite? Or has all Trump's put downs influenced their hiring choices? Maybe this is their idea of "fair and balanced".
I don't really like CNN and haven't watched them in years, but I really expected better of them than this.

(2,433 posts)CNN is simply parading the absurdity of the GOP attacks.
PatSeg
(47,260 posts)though I rather doubt it. There are plenty of ways to demonstrate the absurdity of GOP attacks, you don't have to actually hire a clown to do it. Play some clips from Fox News or Rush Limbaugh. That's how it is usually done. Or maybe they could manufacture some virtual right-wing extremist hologram, they really like all those glitzy high-tech gimmicks. All show and no substance.
I remember when Aaron Brown and Judy Woodruff were among their prime time anchors. CNN was more about actual news in those days.

(8,200 posts)They will gladly manufacture lies to attack their opposition and justify it by saying they are true patriots while Democrats are the enemy and any means to destroy them is justified. I watched that so called interview and I have a major problem with the tactics used by Republicans of attempting to drown out the their opponents. I believe that the host should stop the entire proceeding and tell them to either remain silent or they will be expelled for their gross behavior. The Republicans are obnoxious and their party should be destroyed for their blatant disrespect for basic American democratic ideas.

He performs for the latest big-money donor who supports his current position. He is paid to perform so he does. Today's script calls for him to attack Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman wounded Iraq war veteran.
Duffy would have never been elected to Congress if he didn't live in the highly gerrymandered district design for him.
Nothing will change with Duffy. CNN has hired yet another republican performing clown.

(70,447 posts)Alexander Vindman and his twin brother Yevgeny were born in Ukraine. After the death of their mother, they were brought to New York in December 1979 by their father, Semyon (Simon) along with their older brother. They grew up in Brooklyn's "Little Odessa" neighborhood. The twins and their maternal grandmother were in the Ken Burns film, The Statue of Liberty. Vindman speaks fluent Russian and Ukrainian.
I don't see a long stay for Duffy @ CNN.

The most shocking thing about this is that Duffy might not have known that our country still has white immigrants.
Lots of Russian-American immigrants with thick accents have security clearances including Top Secret.

(518 posts)When I was a little boy (and dinosaurs walked the earth), there was an excellent novel (and a not-so-excellent movie) titled "The Ugly American" -- primarily about a disaster in a third world country because its US diplomatic station was stocked with people who didn't know the language and didn't make an effort to learn the culture or the internal politics of the country. The book was so impressive that Congressmen proposed that diplomatic personnel have, or be trained in, language skills and so forth. Now frankly that's not always possible or practical but that book made a deep impression.
Skip more than 50 years and it is now shameful, even sinister, that the White House resident expert on Ukraine speaks the language.
Goddammit all to hell.

(7,947 posts)CNN, in particular, has hunted for the right pro-Trump pundit, with disastrous results. Jeffrey Lord, whose exchanges with Van Jones regularly went viral, was fired after tweeting Sieg Heil at the president of Media Matters. Jason Miller resigned after he was accused of surreptitiously dosing a woman he had impregnated with an abortion pill. Earlier this year, the network cut ties with two pro-Trump surrogates, Andre Bauer and Jack Kingstonthe latter of whom suggested that Parkland gun control activists were being manipulated by Soros. Kayleigh McEnany left in 2017 to work for the Republican National Committee. Former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, who was still cashing checks from the Trump campaign while he was a paid CNN contributor, resigned from CNN in November of 2016 though he still appears on the network.
An abortion pill-- good lord, where do they find these people.
