One -Year Commemoration Of Synagogue Shooting To be Marked

Source: Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The first anniversary of the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history is being marked around the world Sunday with community service projects, music and an online remembrance. The Tree of Life building has remained closed since the massacre. The three congregations now worship at two nearby synagogues. Last week, Tree of Life leaders unveiled their vision for the damaged building: a rebuilt space for places of worship; memorial, education and social events; and classrooms and exhibitions.

The commemoration's theme is "Remember. Repair. Together." It includes a private Jewish service, studying the portion of the Torah that was to be read when the shooting happened, opportunities to do community service, and a public memorial service.

Several hundred people have registered to volunteer at various community organizations on Sunday. In Germany, the Clarion Quartet, comprised of Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra musicians, will perform at a special event in Berlin...

I read an article yesterday where one of the members was really struggling because he said that "all his friends were dead".

A friend grew up in Squirrel Hill and grandparents worshipped at Tree of Life. Yesterday something made me recall Va Tech in 2007, all those young lives and teachers who experienced that horror.

It's sickening what this country is going through and what we're being 'normalized' to accept in the way of violence.

..In 2017, anti-Semitic incidents rose 57 percent, with 1,986 documented events, according to the Anti-Defamation League, a spike the civil rights group attributed to an increase of reports in high schools and on college campuses.
During the first half of 2019, the ADL recorded 780 anti-Semitic episodes in the U.S. During that time, seven white supremacists were arrested for attacks on Jewish targets.

What happened inside Tree of Life was a story of violence against Jews, yet the gun violence experience is an all-American story. The list of ordinary places that have been sites of gun violence include a college campus, an elementary school, a country and western bar, a gay nightclub, a Walmart, a cinema and a garlic festival.
Pittsburgh reflects a new reality for houses of worship of all faiths: that they, too, are unexpected targets for domestic terrorism..
