One In Four Germans Hold Anti- Semitic Beliefs, Study Finds
Source: DW
Anti-Semitism is gaining a stronger foothold in German society, the Sddeutsche Zeitung newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing a new study from the World Jewish Congress (WJC). Out of the 1,300 Germans who took part in the representative survey, 27% agreed with a range of anti-Semitic statements and stereotypes about Jewish people.
Some 41% said they agreed with the statement that "Jews talk about the Holocaust too much." The same portion said they believed "Jews are more loyal to Israel than to Germany."
Over 20% of respondents said they agreed that Jewish people have "too much power" over the economy, international financial markets and the media. Another 22% agreed that "people hate Jews due to the way they behave."
The survey was carried out two months ago, prior to the anti-Semitic attack targeting a synagogue in the eastern German city of Halle...

Among 'elites,' hostility towards Jews is growing: according to the study, Anti-Semitism is also growing among the wealthy and well-educated. The WJC found that 18% of "elites" -- respondents with at least one university degree who make at least 100,000 ($111,300) per year -- agreed with anti-Semitic sentiments. Within that group, over a quarter said they believed Jewish people have "too much power over world politics" and the economy.

+ Resistance rises: While anti-Semitism is spreading in Germany, the study found that the readiness to combat it is also growing. Two thirds of "elites" said they would sign a petition against anti-Semitism, while a third of all the respondents said they were willing to take part in demonstrations against anti-Semitism.
The vast majority of respondents recognized there was a rise in hostile behavior toward Jewish people in Germany, with 65% saying that rise was tied to the success of "right-wing extremist parties." One in four respondents said it was possible that "something like the Holocaust could happen in Germany again."

(25,586 posts)Jew-hating is the great equalizer in the world of extreme politics, sadly. The Left can sometimes paper over it with the pretense that its an anti-Israel position, but dig down a bit and all too often theres ugliness beneath the preaching.

- NYT, "The Holocaust Is Fading From Memory, Survey Finds," April 2018.
For seven decades, never forget has been a rallying cry of the Holocaust remembrance movement. But a survey released Thursday, on Holocaust Remembrance Day, found that many adults lack basic knowledge of what happened and this lack of knowledge is more pronounced among millennials, whom the survey defined as people ages 18 to 34.
Thirty-one percent of Americans, and 41 percent of millennials, believe that two million or fewer Jews were killed in the Holocaust; the actual number is around six million. Forty-one percent of Americans, and 66 percent of millennials, cannot say what Auschwitz was. And 52 percent of Americans wrongly think Hitler came to power through force.
As we get farther away from the actual events, 70-plus years now, it becomes less forefront of what people are talking about or thinking about or discussing or learning, said Matthew Bronfman, a board member of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany, which commissioned the study. If we wait another generation before you start trying to take remedial action, I think were really going to be behind the eight ball....https://www.nytimes.com/2018/04/12/us/holocaust-education.html

(35,191 posts)Few know about the deaths in the USSR or China. Most of the students I've talked to about it think that far more American soldiers died in Vietnam than any other war--and they're stunned to see the numbers from WWII, WWI, or the Civil War. I've had students, Korean-American and other, try to tell me that the Korean War was obviously due to American imperialism and we attacked Korea.
Even those who know about the Holocaust only get the "approved identity" version: They know about Jews/Roma/gays, not about Slavs that aren't gay. Over 12 million died, but I've had students tell me I was anti-Semitic for saying that anybody but the approved groups suffered: Victimization is somehow exclusive. A few object saying that if Poles were the victimizers, how could they be victims (perhaps because groups aren't monolithic, nor are people just good or just bad?).
It's like anything else: If it's not important, it's not remembered; if it's not remembered, it never happened.

Antisemitism is part of horseshoe politics. It exists on the far left and the far right.

(9,010 posts)So some think that Jewish people "talk too much about the Holocaust" and yet these people still hold these views??? What part of that don't they get?
What fresh hell did their people (the respondents) go through? Who massacred their families, friends and neighbors? Do they see their own kind as having too much power? I highly fucking doubt it. And please, the way they behave? Look in the fucking mirror.
I'm fiercely angry about these jackasses. They all need mental help.
Shame on them and anyone who holds these views.

(The poll also put a spotlight on European attitudes toward other minorities. While 10% of Europeans admitted they had unfavorable views of Jews, 16% said they had negative views of LGBT+ people, 36% said they had unfavorable views of immigrants, 37% said that about Muslims, and 39% said it of Romani people).

(9,010 posts)They must hate themselves. Spending time thinking whole populations/races, etc are inferior must be a horrible way to exist.
Every time I think about these bigots, I feel dirty and depressed but mostly baffled.
It's hard to wrap my mind around how it is that we haven't eradicated this hatred of others.

I question if the answers were a "Hell Yeah! or a "Eh? Yeah" in a give a damn way.

I think its safe to say we probably have about the same proportion of anti-Semitic beliefs here in America, and not only on the far Right. It definitely pops up in the radical activist demographic.

(53,823 posts)...a few were removed, but not for their years of anti-Semitism. Those remaining have little support so they can't be as obvious.
According to a survey by the ADL, the number is 10%, but that is from four years ago. In regards to Germany, in 2014, it was 27%, and that dropped to 16% in 2015. Reading the article, it looks as if some of the same questions were asked.
And, as you state, it isn't just the right which is the problem with anti-Semitic attitudes. I would be interested if someone, anyone, would start to break down these results by party/political affiliation. Frankly, I think those numbers might "woke" some people from their slumber.
