Elijah Cummings, esteemed longtime Baltimore congressman, has died at 68
Source: CBS News
Representative Elijah Cummings, of Baltimore, died early Thursday at the age of 68, his office said. Cummings died at Johns Hopkins Hospital at 2:45 a.m. from "complications concerning longstanding health challenges," his office said. He hadn't returned to work after having a medical procedure that he said would only keep him away for about a week, The Baltimore Sun pointed out.
The House Oversight and Reform Committee chairman, a Democrat and 23-year House veteran, was a key figure in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump and a recent target of intense criticism from the president. Cummings missed two roll call votes Thursday, the first day back following a two-week House recess. He previously released a statement saying he'd be back by the time the session resumed. He hadn't taken part in a roll call vote since Sept. 11. The procedure already caused Cummings to miss a September hearing on Washington, D.C., statehood. The statement didn't detail the procedure. He previously was treated for heart and knee issues.
A sharecropper's son, Cummings was a formidable orator who passionately advocated for the poor in his black-majority district, which encompasses a large portion of Baltimore as well as more well-to-do suburbs. As chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee, Cummings led multiple investigations of Mr. Trump's dealings, including probes in 2019 relating to the president's family members serving in the White House. The president responded by criticizing Cummings' district as a "rodent-infested mess" where "no human being would want to live."
The comments came weeks after Mr. Trump drew bipartisan condemnation following his calls for Democratic congresswomen of color to get out of the U.S. "right now" and go back to their "broken and crime-infested countries." Cummings replied that government officials must stop making "hateful, incendiary comments" that only serve to divide and distract the nation from its real problems, including mass shootings and white supremacy. "Those in the highest levels of the government must stop invoking fear, using racist language and encouraging reprehensible behavior," Cummings said in a speech at the National Press Club.

On a more respectful note--when I read the headline, I gasped very loudly. I'm not so invested in my interest and experience of the gentleman to actually cry--yet. Maybe that's because I am engaged in an ongoing battle not to cry whenever I read or hear the news.

(6,045 posts)...Geez...This is so incredibly SAD! I have issues with neuropathic pain from a spinal cord injury that will flare up with changes in barometric pressure/changes in weather & sometimes cause me to go without sleep for stretches of time causing psychosis. I've not been sleeping well lately & when I heard about his death of the news at 0330 this morning it honestly didn't seem real!!
...Obviously I didn't know U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings personally but(And I know some people will probably poo-poo on this but its me)he was one of those handful of, maybe two handfuls, of public figures whether elected, sports figure or actress/actor, etc., who happen to either support a lot of the same issues you do &/or you just feel they're GOOD PEOPLE. Yeah, sometimes you end up being wrong but most of the time NOT...Because, at least for me anyway, it takes special folks to work their way into my from a distance.
...I just felt U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings was one of the GOOD FOLKS & its incredibly SAD to know he is gone.

Rep. Elijah Cummings: I like to be among my constituents. Let me tell you something man, if I don't do well in this block I'm in trouble. I mean, if you wanna take a poll, if I lost in this block I might as well go-- I might as well stay home.
When riots broke out in Baltimore three years ago after the death of a young black man, Freddie Gray, who was fatally injured in the back of a police van, Cummings gained national attention walking the troubled neighborhoods trying to keep the peace. He is part of the city's fabric.
