2nd Official Is Weighing Whether to Blow the Whistle on Trump's Ukraine Dealings
Source: New York Times
WASHINGTON A second intelligence official who was alarmed by President Trumps dealings with Ukraine is weighing whether to file his own formal whistle-blower complaint and testify to Congress, according to two people briefed on the matter.
The official has more direct information about the events than the first whistle-blower, whose complaint that Mr. Trump was using his power to get Ukraine to investigate his political rivals touched off an impeachment inquiry. The second official is among those interviewed by the intelligence community inspector general to corroborate the allegations of the original whistle-blower, one of the people said.
The inspector general, Michael Atkinson, briefed lawmakers privately on Friday about how he substantiated the whistle-blowers account. It was not clear whether he told lawmakers that the second official is considering filing a complaint.
A new complaint, particularly from someone closer to the events, would potentially add further credibility to the account of the first whistle-blower, a C.I.A. officer who was detailed to the National Security Council at one point. He said that he relied on information from more than half a dozen American officials to compile his allegations about Mr. Trumps campaign to solicit foreign election interference that could benefit him politically.

(349 posts)First, nobody needs to "add further credibility to the account of the first whistle-blower"there's very solid evidence that everything they reported is true. Second, whistleblowers don't usually leak that they're thinking of whistleblowing: revealing this information risks their anonymity without either reporting the wrongdoing or acquiring protection as a whistleblower. It would also be extraordinary if the IG himself informed Congress of another potential whistleblower.
I do hope, and expect, that other whistleblowers will step forward.

(2,495 posts)Who are these two people that were "briefed" on the matter? There is some agency giving briefings on people who are considering filing whistleblower complaints?
Hmm, well maybe it came from the IG. Maybe he briefed lawmakers (which seems to go against his role and duties to protect whistleblowers) and the two people are lawmakers or their staff. Well no, the article says it isn't clear he told that to lawmakers so... ??
So two unnamed people were "briefed" by an unknown person and the reporter apparently has no other source of verification.
