Senate GOP vows to quash impeachment articles

Source: The Hill

Senate Republicans are vowing to quickly quash any articles of impeachment that pass the House and warn that Democrats will feel a political backlash if they go forward and impeach President Trump.

Republican senators say there are no grounds to impeach Trump and are daring Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to embark on what they dismiss as a fool’s errand that will turn off swing voters.

“My response to them is go hard or go home,” said Sen. John Kennedy (R-La.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has jurisdiction over impeachment. “If you want to impeach him, stop talking. Do it. Do it. Go to Amazon, buy a spine and do it. And let’s get after it.”

“I think the public will feel like it’s more harassment,” he predicted.

I interpreted what he said more as "come at me/us, bro." He's daring the Democrats to go through with articles of impeachment, secure in the knowledge that the GOP Senators are gonna form ranks and vote against conviction. I think he's also referring to the opinion polls showing that most Americans aren't in favor of impeachment.

The GOP may find that people change their minds once all the facts are out for the world to see, though.

Graham said it’s harder to say how the Senate would handle articles of impeachment based on a whistleblower complaint because little is known about its contents.

“Who knows what’s in it,” he said of the Ukraine-related complaint. “I haven’t heard anything. I’m not going to speculate on stuff like that.”

Well for one thing, Lindsey, we already know some of what is in it because Trump can't shut up about it. And you clearly are worried.

poor little Trumpie is so trodden upon, a little snowflake who can't catch a break. everyone is against him!

Let Republicans have their say. It's going to be a war. GOP fingerprints will be all over it. Sticking to Constitutional principles will minimize damage to Democrats, to the extent possible.

I am in the camp that says this particular inquiry is a surgical strike, and that putting the bulk of the Mueller Report behind is a good thing because it's so complex. Or if they do use it, they should find 2 or 3 Articles of impeachment from it, not 11 or 12. But there are also folks saying it should ALL be in there.

I also agree that with Pelosi - the times found us. This Ukraine incident is something they could not ignore. It's not manufactured, it's tangible, and obstruction is part of it. Trump is cornered, the GOP is cornered, Mitch is cornered by his obstruction. This is a war that must be fought. We lose our democracy if we don't fight it. We may lose if we do, but at least we go down swinging.

Tue Sep 24, 2019, 07:39 PM
Sep 2019

First, this is John Kennedy, a Republican Senator from Louisiana making this statement. What an insult to the memory of a fine Democratic President, one who gave his life for his country. And now we have a Senator with that same name defending a president that has no concern for the Constitution, or the rule of law.

Second, the empty threat that the Democrats will be punished by the voters for doing their job. I think Senator Kennedy is running scared.
He knows what Trump is really like, and he also knows he must defend and protect this man. So, he pretends the voting public is as stupid and callous as the ones who are part of Trump's base...a base that is only 40% of the electorate at best.
I think the curtain if finally rising on Act 1 of this whole impeachment process.
Act 2 will begin around the first of the year, and Act 3 will take place several months later.
It is ridiculous to believe the Senate will remove Trump from office, but it is also deadly for the Republicans to give Trump a free ride for all the horrible things he has done.

Senator Kennedy knows that impeachment is a lose/lose situation for the Republicans. The general public will judge them for not impeaching Trump, and Trump's base will judge them if they do.

No wonder he is so upset.

Can mitch just move directly to a vote without any hearings?

We all know the Senate will probably not act on any Articles of Impeachment from the House, and even if there were a trial, we all know what the outcome would be: Trump is acquitted, and struts around like a peacock because of it.

Just one little detail, though, and don't think the Republicans haven't taken this into consideration: if the House holds impeachment hearings, a LOT of news will focus on them, and a LOT of ugly shit about Trump and his pals (conceivably a few Republican Senators, too) will become public record. THAT is what they are scared of, especially a year before the election. They are hoping to create as much negative publicity about impeachment as they can. This could possibly even be a Hail Mary attempt to stop hearings from being held. Pelosi is no fool. She knows an impeachment trial would never end in a conviction in the Senate because that requires a two thirds majority. But if she was waiting for the revelations of an impeachment hearing to have a maximum impact on the election next year, her timing couldn't be better.

I have three things to say about that. First, Trump's base is going to show up and vote regardless. Secondly, comparing Clinton lying about an affair to the destruction that Trump has and is doing is apples & oranges. Lastly, you have to do the right thing, and that is to hold Trump accountable by officially opening an Impeachment Inquiry.
