Police in Seattle are searching for a gunman who opened fire at a light-rail station late Friday night, killing one and injuring two others, authorities said. The shooting broke out in the city's downtown area around 9:30 p.m. local time, CBS affiliate KOIN-TV reported.
First responders discovered three victims underground at the Westlake Station. Medics performed life-saving measures on one of the victims who died, the Seattle Fire Department said.
"As I get down into the tunnel, on the bottom escalators, there's a guy sitting there, bleeding out from his leg," witness David Lewis told KOIN-TV.
Investigators believe the shooting began above ground at a nearby McDonald's. They believe only one suspect is responsible. An investigation is ongoing.

I don't suppose this shooting will be worth much outrage, not enough carnage.

(33,982 posts)Given the area and the nature of the shooting, this was 99% your 'run of the mill' robbery. Money or drugs, or both.
See crazy shit around there all the time. A little south at Marion/Cherry/Yesler streets it gets even worse.

(15,888 posts)I used to change buses there (3rd and Pine) but it got so bad that I would just stay on the first bus until I got a 1/2 mile from my destination and just walk the rest of the way.

(32,992 posts)The McDonald's referenced as the beginning of this deadly argument has been at the center of the open-air drug market known as "The Blade" for literally decades. It's not in some seedy part of town; it's on Pine St. and 3rd Ave., between the main retail core and Pike Place Market. Tourists, locals shoppers, and workers walk through the middle of it every day. I walk through it once a week or so. If you've been to Seattle ever, you probably walked through there.
So the killer here likely was involved in a beef involving drugs. Which drugs? Probably opiates or meth. If you need to buy heroin, that's the place to go.
The entry to the light rail tunnel is maybe 50' away from that McDonalds on that side of Pine St., so I'd imagine one or more of the victims was running down there to escape the shooter.
I have no idea if an innocent bystander got shot. It's certainly possible; that is perhaps the most heavily-used stop on the light rail, and it would have been close to the end of the blowout UW football game 2 stops away.
Senseless, pointless tragedy. Legalize all drugs.
