DOJ argues House lawmakers should not gain access to Mueller grand jury materials

Source: CNN

Updated 7:30 PM ET, Fri September 13, 2019

(CNN)The Justice Department said Friday that a request to a federal court from House Democrats seeking access to secret grand jury material underlying special counsel Robert Mueller's report should be turned down because the lawmakers have "come nowhere close to demonstrating a particularized need" for the information.

House Democrats first filed suit in July, days after Mueller's testimony on Capitol Hill, asking the court to order the release of grand jury information connected to the Mueller report to the House Judiciary Committee. The Democrats argue they need the information to consider whether to move toward impeachment proceedings.

Specifically, the lawmakers are seeking the unredacted Mueller report, as well as transcripts of grand jury testimony related to President Donald Trump's knowledge of Russian efforts to interfere in the 2016 election and links between members of his campaign and Russians. Lawmakers also want any grand jury testimony related to Trump's knowledge of any potential "criminal acts" by him or his associates.

In the filing, the the Justice Department called lawmakers' request an "extraordinary order" that is overly broad.
"The Committee's failure to provide a tailored request accompanied by a concrete explanation for why this material is necessary is particularly striking given the extensive investigations Congress has already conducted into Russian inference with the 2016 election, gathering information to which the Committee already has access," the Justice Department wrote..............................................

The problem is that they’re unlikely to do so in time for the election.

But the public might decide that their defense is itself unacceptable. Still a win

Trump, too. But one can imagine Trump being truly ignorant of how the three branches of government work as checks and balances, but it's hard to imagine a graduate of GW Law School pretending this is normal.

Typically, the top and only the top officials tender their resignations as a new administration comes into power. In fact, it's often just the AG and maybe 1-2 other senior folks.

I'd like to see a clean sweep all the way down to non-lawyer admins. and support staff. Jaysus Christ these lawyers have bent, manipulated and lied about so, so many issues under Sessions and now Barr it's tragic. These same folks need to be severely punished for their go-along attitude to whatever Trump and Barr wanted, like trying to indict McCabe, threatening jail for Hillary, beating up on the FBI and other agency staff for not kowtowing to Trump's idiotic demands. Heck, even trying to deny at all turns witness testimony (WH staff, Cabinet and even Sessions) and legitimate Congressional oversight.

Our candidates need to start talking up how they will rid the DOJ of this vermin!

She's qualified, and I believe if she accepted the job she'd clean up that DOJ in no time. Wishful thinking on my part, but an idea...
