'I was very much a person the most powerful government in the world wanted to go away'

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: The Guardian

The world’s most famous whistleblower, Edward Snowden, says he has detected a softening in public hostility towards him in the US over his disclosure of top-secret documents that revealed the extent of the global surveillance programmes run by American and British spy agencies.

In an exclusive two-hour interview in Moscow to mark the publication of his memoirs, Permanent Record, Snowden said dire warnings that his disclosures would cause harm had not come to pass, and even former critics now conceded “we live in a better, freer and safer world” because of his revelations.

In the book, Snowden describes in detail for the first time his background, and what led him to leak details of the secret programmes being run by the US National Security Agency (NSA) and the UK’s secret communication headquarters, GCHQ.

He describes the 18 years since the September 11 attacks as “a litany of American destruction by way of American self-destruction, with the promulgation of secret policies, secret laws, secret courts and secret wars”.

he turned so-called whistle blower and defected to Russia.

Stay the hell over there with your benefactor Putin. And btw, thanks for trump and his sharing of intel info with Putin. Did he learn that from you?

Edit: Actually, I should say our President tries to be even less transparent. His being a bragart and an idiot lead to more inadvertant transparency than they'd like...

That SOB Jeffrey Wigand! I wouldv'e been able to keep smoking without concern if it wasn't for him! I looked so cool, like James Dean, with that stub hanging out of my mouth.

Don't get me started on Daniel Ellsberg. F'n traitor! Who cares that the government was lying to us about our involvement in the Vietman war, or if it was winnable? Better not to know anything! USA USA USA!

Chelsea Manning? Who cares if she saw war crimes by our troops! Doesn't she know she should just accept atrocities by our own troops behind the always reliable "just following orders"? A conscience has no place in our armed forces!

Enough of these bleeding heart do-gooders exposing secrecy and lies. We should always just blindly trust our authorities! Republican or Democratic, they only have our best interests at heart! Who cares if the government thought they could pressure communication companies to hand over all users correspondence without any cause or warrant in a mass fishing exercise? If you haven't done anything wrong, you got nothing to worry about, amIright?

So much better to live in blissful ignorance. Now, I've got a few cat videos I've been meaning to watch.

Beware of who you make into a hero and what their true purpose is.

--On Edit to add:

Wigand, Ellsberg, and Manning all stayed in the U.S. They didn't run to an autocratic leader overseas for protection. The same leader who routinely murders journalists.

about traitors who did so due to disillusionment with our govt back in the 70s. They got a ton of jail time. Snowden is a traitor and should be locked up for 40 years too.
