While most North Carolinians were remembering the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001, the Republican leaders in the General Assembly took advantage of a half-empty House and voted to override the governors budget veto Wednesday morning.
Gov. Roy Cooper (D) said in a news conference that House Republicans called for a surprise vote while he and House members were honoring first responders on the anniversary of 9/11.
Republicans called a deceptive surprise override of my budget veto, Cooper said. Unfortunately, its the people of North Carolina who lose.
House Minority Leader Darren Jackson (D) said he told his caucus members that they did not need to be in attendance and that state Rep. David Lewis (R), chairman of the Rules, Calendar and Operations Committee, gave Jackson his word that there would be no votes, according to the News & Observer.

(5,751 posts)This seems really odd to me. Don't they have rules requiring notification of votes?

(26,721 posts)The veto override has been on their calendar for a couple months now. The governor has actually been teasing them about it.
We cant tell who is telling the truth about what was or wasnt said re: holding a vote... but it was boneheaded to leave republicans with both a quorum and supermajority during a legislative session.
This could make for some very dramatic antics in the senate in coming days.

(736 posts)the next time someone implies that it's the Russians that are dividing us with all of their social media antics. Nope. The republicans outright, blatantly are fucking assholes and they don't give a flying fuck about the rest of us. No, the Russians didn't do this to our country, the republicans did.
I no longer have to justify my utter hate for them. They prove me right every single day.
