A no-deal Brexit could result in rising food and fuel prices, disruption to medicine supplies and public disorder on Britain’s streets, according to secret documents the government was forced by MPs to publish on Wednesday.

A five-page document spelling out the government’s “planning assumptions” under Operation Yellowhammer – the government’s no-deal plan – was disclosed in response to a “humble address” motion.

The content of the document was strikingly similar to the plan leaked to the Sunday Times in August, which the government dismissed at the time as out of date.

That document was described as a “base case”; but the new document claims to be a “worst-case scenario”.

15. Facing EU tariffs makes petrol exports to the EU uncompetitive. Industry had plans to mitigate the impact on refinery margins and profitability but UK Government policy to set petrol import tariffs at 0% inadvertently undermines these plans.

This leads to significant financial losses and announcement of two refinery closures (and transition to import terminals) and direct job losses (about 2000).

Resulting strike action at refineries would lead to disruptions to fuel availability for 1-2 weeks in the regions directly supplied by the refineries.

Loss of gasoline/diesel fuel would be a HUGE problem for everyone, a cascading effect that could change this "green and pleasant land" into Max Madville.

LONDON (AP) — The Latest on Britain’s planned departure from the European Union: (all times local):

8:10 p.m.

The British government says U.K. citizens and businesses are not prepared for leaving the European Union without a divorce agreement, and a no-deal Brexit could see the number of trucks coming through a key Channel crossing fall by half within a day.

A planning document dated Aug. 2 and published Wednesday says “public and business readiness for a no-deal will remain at a low level” ahead of Britain’s scheduled Oct. 31 departure date from the EU.

The paper sets out the government’s “reasonable worst-case planning assumption” for a no-deal Brexit. It says because of new checks, the number of trucks crossing between Calais and Dover would fall between 40% and 60% within a day, and disruptions could last three months.

The document also says “certain types of fresh food supply will decrease” and prices will go up in a worst-case no-deal Brexit scenario.

The document was published after lawmakers in Parliament demanded it.
