Trump pushing for major crackdown on homeless camps in California, with aides discussing moving residents to government-backed facilities

By Jeff Stein, Tracy Jan, Josh Dawsey and Ashley Parker
September 10, 2019 at 4:36 p.m. EDT

President Trump has ordered White House officials to conduct a sweeping crackdown on homelessness in California, citing the state's growing crisis, according to four government officials aware of the effort.

The talks have intensified in recent weeks. Administration officials have discussed using the federal government to get homeless people off the streets of Los Angeles and other areas and into new government-backed facilities, according to two officials briefed on the planning.

But it is unclear how they could accomplish this and what legal authority they would use. It is also unclear whether the state's Democratic politicians would cooperate with Trump, who has sought to embarrass them over the homelessness crisis with repeated attacks on their competency.

Trump's directive is part of his broader targeting of California and a number of major U.S. cities in recent months, including Baltimore and Chicago. He has complained about what he says are years of failed Democratic leadership that have led sustained poverty and crime. ... Top officials representing the White House and Department of Housing and Urban Development arrived in California this week for a round of meetings. A particular focus has been the "skid row" section of Los Angeles, officials said. The president is directly involved with the initiative, officials said, and has asked for updates.

A Swedish scientist speaking at Stockholm summit last week offered an unusual possible tactic in combating global climate change: eating human flesh.

Stockholm School of Economics professor and researcher Magnus Soderlund reportedly said he believes eating human meat, derived from dead bodies, might be able to help save the human race if only a world society were to “awaken the idea.”

This is a huge issue in LA right now with businesses and homeowners at wits end. My family lives in Hollywood area and are very progressive and compassionate but it's so bad in many areas it's a public health concern with diseases not seen in decades coming back. I was stunned on my last trip as the homeless have literally taken over stretches of sidewalks with piles of belongings. Businesses and residential entrances are being blocked. This isn't the answer but it will have to be addressed soon by the Governor. My guess is they will be offered an option of moving or be moved, at least, off public sidewalks. No easy answer. Many I encountered are unemployable or suffer from mental illness.

we throw untold billions into wars that we never win and a military that acts as an arm of capitalism while the citizens are homeless, jobless, medical care less while sleeping and shitting in the streets while the plutocrats steal more and more of the public funds and land.

It would make sense to begin a new Civilian Conservation Corp, funded by a reduction in our MIC budget.

Our infrastructure would gain untold benefits while the citizens would at least enjoy the fruits of their labor.

but we've gone beyond that simple idea at this point.

And some space on military bases to lock the homeless people out of sight. The ICE "camps" are so successful, what could possibly go wrong. Also, homelessness can be either short term or long term. This would likely convert the short term homeless into long term homelessness, making matters worse.

This would do nothing to address the many causes of homelessness. The mental health issues would remain as would the displaced workers and those with drug issues. Uncaring Republican policies exacerbates the problem. If you sincerely want to correct the problem develop programs that address these issues rather than spending the money on cages to "house" them in. Another example of the sickness that flows through the veins of the Republican hierarchy.

free dental care, and great weather. We have @1million people in San Francisco, @8000 of which are homeless at any given time. They live in Golden Gate Park at Stanyan & Haight Streets (aka Hippie Hollow) and in a couple of concentrated areas downtown.

Every service you can imagine is available, and I'm sure the same is true for the rest of CA, save the wingnut areas. Plus, hundreds of nonprofits & corporations offer education programs, grooming, housing, & food. On the rare occasions that we have rain lasting more than an hour, communities open up warming centers. The average temp is around 65F, and the air is clear & smells sweet.

Granted, it's much easier to be homeless here than in Chicago or Baltimore, but they offer services, too. Anyway, Trump is just once again pandering to what's left of his base by threatening to invade Democratic cities & states, which he knows is illegal.

Trump is the "Who's gonna make me?" president. It's time to make him go to prison.

Tue Sep 10, 2019, 08:26 PM

All involve at least some out of pocket expense. My brother has MediCal, the "free" heath coverage in CA. It ain't free. You still need to pay for transportation to your appointment, some medications aren't covered, others are only partly covered, and there are many noncovered treatments, such as the back surgery my brother needed. Dental care is just the basics: extractions, fillings. My brother had a bad molar, they just pulled it and gave him antibiotics. No bridge, no dental implant. I am unaware of any state funding of pet care.

Nor is there readily available personal grooming, clothing laundry, or a quiet place to sleep. Homeless shelters are scary, loud, overcrowded horror shows. Just come to 5th Street in Downtown L.A. if you think the homeless have "everything you can imagine" in CA.

But I will agree that it's "eeasier" to be homeless here than colder parts of the country. At least you won't freeze to death overnight here.

If you don't live here, do some research. Even the bus drivers don't ask homeless/poor people to pay or get off unless they're frightening others.

I do live here, meaning California. Where do you live? Have you ever been to 5th Street in downtown LA? Dialing 311 does not get you a place to live, nor a doctor, nor food for your pet. If it did, we wouldn't have homeless people in CA.

Why are you saying this blatantly incorrect stuff? Why are you implying people are homeless by choice? Do you think people want to suffer, that they want to live on the streets?

There are organizations that provide transition shelter and aid, but they're way overrun by demand. One of the shelter organizations based in San Jose (and they cover all of Santa Clara and San Mateo counties) was pleased to announce earlier this year that they can now provide protected parking for families - no room, no help, but at least a place where you can sleep in your vehicle without worrying about being disturbed - and have some access to bathing facilities.

I live mid-Peninsula, between San Francisco and San Jose. The homeless aren't as obvious here as they are in SF, but you can find them if you know where to look. There are a lot of people who live in their vehicles, probably a lot more than street people. And while we don't get MidWest-type blizzards it does get below freezing here in winter: a homeless person in my town died of exposure a few winters back.

Health care for two persons is over $1500 a month and that is with Medicare A & B.

You need to see a dentist, you pay for it.

As for the rest of the things you seem to think are free, well you are wrong.

Oh, as for "Hippie Hollow", there never was such a place.

Maybe you meant "Hippie Hill "?

Give the Great State of California a break would you?

This California bashing gets old as all hell.

Do you live in CA? I've lived across the street from GGPark for 7 years, and I interact with the homeless regularly.

I worked for the County of Santa Barbara in the Behavior Wellness dept until I retired in 2016.

The money for homelessness is limited and can’t possibly do all that you are talking about.

The services you talk about come from counties and private non profit organizations.

Warming shelters are not opened until there are consecutive nights of freezing temperatures. At that they are seldom filled.

If the homeless qualify for Medicaid(Medical in CA) they can get some medical treatment and mental health services. That was mostly for children until the ACA and Medicaid expansion.

The world of homelessness in CA is nothing like you describe.

The facts are in the Homeless Management Information System HMIS which was put into practice some years ago.

If you could get the data you would see how wrong you are.

57. They moved the homeless where I am located

To a parking lot next to the county welfare office.

How kind was that exactly?

They have relocated to other places but they are not gone.

They will never be gone until they do something about the fact that there are not enough places available to rent at a reasonable price.

I'd be right there with them had I not managed to get out of a negative situation I was in a number of years ago and yes, it can happen to anyone.

One roll of the dice go wrong and , welcome to HELL I'm sure you'll agree!

One has to wonder if these California bashers are green with envy or filled with hatred?

spend the money on it that is needed.

In our protestant way of thinking, people who are homeless brought it on themselves. Helping them is not our problem.

You would be amazed at how many times I have argued against that attitude.

is all about this. No surprises. If he can, he will try to expand the Fascist grip on the Nation with concentration camps in mind and a scapegoat de jour.

Will California agree to this help and is the use of the word "intercede" a threat? If so, will it set another precedent where American citizens are then legally detained and placed in camps because they are in poverty, rather than for committing crimes?

Notice that this is not a means to help the homeless obtain housing, but to take away what they have now and place them in government facilities.

This country already has an insane incarceration problem as it is.

Crackdown, huh? Sounds like a term you would use for criminals. Even the mention of it implies another slippery slope.

And, of course, anything that Trump proposes has ulterior motives and comes backed by his total ignorance.

Trump officials tour unused FAA facility in California in search for place to relocate homeless people

By Jeff Stein, Josh Dawsey and Tracy Jan
September 11 at 8:49 PM

A team of Trump administration officials toured a California facility once used by the Federal Aviation Administration this week as they searched for a potential site to relocate homeless people, according to three government officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the private tour.

President Trump has directed aides to launch a major crackdown on homelessness in California, spurring an effort across multiple government agencies to determine how to deal with sprawling tent camps on the streets of Los Angeles and other cities, officials said.

Trump is expected to visit California on Tuesday and Wednesday. One administration official with knowledge of Trump’s visit to California said there were discussions about an announcement related to California’s growing homeless problem next week, but a second official said that any decision could be premature and that it was not on the current schedule for the trip.

Trump has asked aides to figure out “how the hell we can get these people off the streets,” one senior administration official said.

The FAA facility toured by administration officials is located in or near Los Angeles, but its precise name or whereabouts — or whether it is a current or former government facility — were not immediately known.
