Netanyahu pledges to annex occupied Jordan Valley

Source: BBC

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to annex part of the occupied West Bank on the border with Jordan if he is voted back into office next week.

Mr Netanyahu said he would apply "Israeli sovereignty over the Jordan Valley and northern Dead Sea".

Such a move would be popular with right-wing parties which he would have to depend upon to form a coalition but fiercely opposed by Palestinians.

Israel has occupied the West Bank since 1967 but stopped short of annexation.

The salamander in the middle of it is Jericho; I'm guessing they don't want that amount of Arabs suddenly becoming Israeli citizens, so they get the West Berlin treatment. Or 'Bantustan', if you will.

The Israeli prime minister said on Tuesday that he planned to make the move, which would permanently seize up to one-third of the West Bank, after the election next week and hinted it may have been approved by Washington.

“I am waiting to do this in maximum coordination with [Donald] Trump,” he said in a speech broadcast live on Israeli television.

“This map defines our eastern frontier. We haven’t had this kind of opportunity since the [1967] six-day war, and may not have it again for another 50 years.” His comment referred to the war in which Israel captured the land.

J Street, a liberal pro-Israel lobby in the US, said Netanyahu’s annexation plan “would destroy Israeli democracy and constitute a flagrant violation of international law”.

Well, yes; they won't have such a right wing US government again for another 50 years.
