National Rifle Association is a domestic terrorist organization, San Francisco rules

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors on Tuesday passed a resolution declaring the National Rifle Association a "domestic terrorist" organization, The San Francisco Chronicle reports.
"The NRA exists to spread disinformation, and knowingly puts guns into the hands of those who would harm and terrorize us," said Supervisor Catherine Stefani, who wrote the resolution, KTVU reported.
A response from the NRA calls the resolution a "ludicrous stunt" and "an effort to distract from the real problems facing San Francisco, such as rampant homelessness, drug abuse and skyrocketing petty crime, to name a few," according to the station.
Supervisors unanimously adopted the resolution, which also calls on the city and county to "take every reasonable step to limit" organizations that do business with San Francisco from also working with the NRA, The San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Note how the NRA's response uses the same "strike back" template of a trump tweet

(12,712 posts)In light of the recent propaganda the NRA has been putting out there, this fantastic news.
The time has come to RE-FRAME the NRA and calling it out as a proponent of domestic terrorism is an excellent strategy and it can diffuse the "freedom & rights" rhetoric they utilize to cover that up. Anything that is supporting this trend of frequent mass shootings should be called out on the carpet and this is a good start.
NRA = A DOMESTIC TERRORISM PROMOTIONAL ORGANIZATION.
It won't really be hard to make that association and get it into focus on a larger scale.

(6,616 posts)And equating NRA with Domestic Terrorism is exactly right.

(12,712 posts)I was thinking about National RIFLE Association. It sounds rather old time Americana in a way.
Rifle? Rifle? Really? Yeah, sure! And atomic bombs are just really big hand grenades
Ah, American Automatic Weapon Association is more accurate and definitive these days. NAWA.
Get with the times, NRA.

(22,665 posts)The NRA worked with our country's enemies to undermine our democracy. They've ceased to be just a rifle association, instead have turned into a terrorist organization. Just look at their followers. Are there any who don't feel empowered to force their will upon others the way the Taliban does?
Add the Tea Party and the Oath Keepers on that list of terrorist organizations as well.

(81,110 posts)Its blood money theyre getting from their donors. And its blood money theyre using to buying influence.
Theyre buying that influence and those politicians so YOU and I can have the freedom to be shot to death someday.
That might be a good way to MESSAGE it.
Message it so its tied to the word death.
Directly tied to the word death.
Laminated to the word death.
Tattooed across the face with the word death.
The word death is a BIG-ASS heavyweight word with all kinds of toxic power to generate fear.
And FEAR is powerful.
Its a Goliath of a motivator, and targeted audiences dont even realize theyre being played like a deck of cards in Vegas. It gets under their skin. And therein lies the direct injection of toxins directly into the psychological bloodstream.
Remember the Idiot Sarah Palins oft-repeated death panels. That talking point took the point she was trying to make all the way home with many of her gullible and unsuspecting - and increasingly fearful voters.
Its perception management.
Its the way you twist, adjust, tweak, and up-end public opinion.
Ive been watching this stuff for the a long time. Its kind of a morbid fascination brought forward from years of watching my salesman father devise ad campaigns, slogans and sales pitches, commercials and print ads - how IT LOOKED - for whatever product he was selling. The way he chose his words sometimes - I came to find it objectively fascinating. I always wondered. Why did he say it that way? Why did he choose that word or phrase? What is it - that makes it catchy (and effective)? Whats the lure? What makes it compelling/beguiling/desirable/reassuring/reaffirming/even sexy?
I found myself studying those fine, fine, almost indiscernible details as I grew up, started working in the news biz, and joined a voice-over workshop (where you become intensely attuned to the WAY you say - ie: sell something). The conscious and deliberate use of strategic pausing and cadence and loudness and vocal inflection.
I found myself intrigued by what sold and didnt sell. How if you were pleasingly clever and amusing, you rendered the target favorably predisposed toward you - and whatever-the-heck youre trying to sell.
Statements like let them hate, so long as they fear - from some world-class political figure like kkkarl rove (although Im not sure about that, but I first heard it during his bush/cheney heyday).
Stuff like this can be MIGHTY useful for message crafting. I think as many of us as possible should start getting good at this. We cant just wait for our leaders and reps to do it. Anymore than business is now going ahead on its own to deal with gun violence because its useless to wait and hope for our leaders to do it. WE have to start leading on this. It isnt top-down. Its bottom-up. Which is what grassroots politics is all about.
Sometimes I see I DU as a laboratory where we can kick around ideas and test how they sound; a workout room where we kick it around
and build some muscle behind those ideas, and see if they can withstand strain; and a kitchen where we can cook this stuff up and then see how it looks and tastes, plus how most advantageously to serve it. I know there are LOTS of great minds here. I read em every day.

(32,579 posts)The RWNJs have been using those "trigger" words for a long time, and now we should do it too. At least when we need to beat them down. I wouldn't want to have our side doing this constantly, it's just too exhausting. But we need to understand their strategies and beat them at it when we can.

(1,414 posts)but honestly I'm not sure this is the best route to take. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but we should be very careful in how we throw around that "domestic terrorism" charge. I'd like to see the NRA demolished, I'd like to see that guns are better regulated, but I think this is too far. That's just my opinion. I'm in NO WAY defending the NRA, but rather am thinking this only gives the right more ammo to attempt to strangle free speech and political dissent by lobbing " domestic terror" charges at organizations we hold dear. Let's just stop and take a breath for a moment.

(707 posts)Watching civil liberties trampled on because I personally dont agree with something is worrying. The blowback from actions like this are predictable and now expected. Planned Parenthood and Antifa will get labeled in some right wing areas soon. This will inevitably water down the meaning and create more division. I too denounce the lobbying effort the NRA preforms and disagree with them, but I can see tactics like this being used against groups I do agree with. Hell I can see Oklahoma or a town in it declaring the Democratic Party a terrorist organization and they will point to this childishly and say you started it.

(22,065 posts)members live in San Francisco? Really nice to knock their town and not help residents in fighting crime (other than owning a gun pls.). The NRA just showed its stripes and is only protecting some Americans while not helping others, because they are obviously not American enough. More reason for people to dump the NRA and go to another org. that truly cares about Americans.
