Bill Flores Announces Intent to Not Seek Re-election in 2020
Source: Congessman Bill Flores
U.S. Representative Bill Flores (R-Texas) announced today that he will not seek another term in Congress. Flores is currently serving his fifth term representing the 17th Congressional District of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives and offered the following comments regarding his decision:
"Serving my country as the Representative of the hardworking Texas families in the 17th Congressional District has been an honor and one of the greatest privileges of my life. When I originally announced that I was running for Congress in 2009, I was firm in my commitment that I would run for six or fewer terms. After much prayer over the past few days and following conversations with my wife, Gina, during that time, I have decided that my current term will be my last.
"During the almost 10-year period since our decision to run for Congress in late 2009, much has happened. During that time, I have traveled hundreds of thousands of miles, spent hundreds of nights away from home and generally worked 12-18 hours per day, six days per week in order to effectively serve over 700 thousand constituents in Central Texas and the Brazos Valley. Our family evolved substantially during that period as Gina lost her father, we picked up a daughter-in-law, added four awesome grandkids and watched my Mom and Dad move further along their senior years. My job as Representative has made it difficult to spend as much time with Gina and the rest of my family as I would like.

(56,828 posts)Numbers don't tell the entire story, but they're a start:
Flores won by 32% in 2014
25% in 2016
and "only" 15% last year in 2018.
With Trump's popularity down in Texas, he might have had a fight on his hands to keep his seat.

(11,513 posts)With any luck, the 2020 elections will be a complete bloodbath for them. Republicans have proven time and time again they are unfit to govern. Decent Americans must unite to vote them out for good.

(45,380 posts)Not that a R+12 district would be in danger, but it probably sucks to be in the minority party with very little influence in the House, and it must be exhausting to have to always defend a bloviating orange buffoon.

(9,426 posts)bills passed, they are PART TIME workers. They get very generous full time benefits, however. Who is this guy kidding? Is there a scandal lurking somewhere? When will one of them have the courage to say "I am DONE. Impossible to work with a madman in the WH, and Moscow Mitch running everything."

(3,252 posts)I would love to see the gerrymander backfire on the Republicans. The down side of the gerrymander is the opposition doesn't have to spend as many resources on their safe seats and can put more resources ib to making these "safe" seats competitive. We've seen this a lot since the "thing" got into office (I refuse to say elected). I think a good candidate can make this district competitive. Even if you don't win it keeps them scared.
I am beginning to believe Pilosi has a lot to do with the high number of retirements. After the way Republicans behaved when they had the majority I don't think it's business as usual for the minority. No bacon for the pigs. Politicians can talk about abstract things forever, but if you don't bring home the pork you are uselss in the voters eyes.
