LOS ANGELES The Trump administration on Monday announced that it would reconsider its decision to force immigrants facing life-threatening health crises to return to their home countries, an abrupt move last month that generated public outrage and was roundly condemned by the medical establishment.
On Aug. 7, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, without public notice, eliminated a deferred action program that had allowed immigrants to avoid deportation while they or their relatives were undergoing lifesaving medical treatment.
The agency, part of the Department of Homeland Security, had sent letters informing those who had asked for a renewal, which the immigrants must make every two years, that it was no longer entertaining such requests. The letters said that the immigrants must leave the country within 33 days, or face deportation.
On Monday, the agency said in a statement that while limiting the program was appropriate, officials would complete the caseload that was pending on August 7.
The statement said that deportation proceedings had not been initiated against anyone who had received the letter. However, it did not say whether it would continue to grant immigrants extensions to stay in the country or whether the program would be continued after current applications are processed.......................................

(5,722 posts)A big part of the reason this unannounced program got so much pushback is because you put a spotlight on it night after night.
The Nazis of the '40s only got as far as they did because the rest of the world said "Eh. Not MY problem" until it was. The Nazis of the 21st Century just blinked because Maddow reminds us that this is EVERYONE's problem.
They WILL try again when they think the heat's off.
It's up to humanity to make sure that heat stays on.
Had an argument with some turd at SFGate who insisted that this was all on the Buesos for "illegally" bringing Maria to this country. So: genuinely heartless fascist, or just another edgy edgy edgelord trying to convince everyone that he's edgy?
Does it matter?

Someone else close to Trump saw that the gain was not worth the negative publicity and called the German shepherd off his attack.

(61,865 posts)Miller and his crew have no objections to sending immigrants to their deaths. They see all foreigners as people here to exploit the United States.
While nobody wants to claim ownership of this clusterf**k, ICE said they were just following the law. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if ICE tries to carry out these deportation notices with a lower profile.

(48,955 posts)An extreme example of a Trump technique.
Despite the fact that this follows a particular, common, Trump storyline, that this is not likely over.
Trump is as volatile as an unstable isotope. Miller, or someone else gets in his ear to tell him that this played well with his base, and this malevolent and implicit murderous program could come back on line.

(16,935 posts)It is so cruel to add to the stress of illness by toying with people who are sick. People like Ms. Bueso shouldn't be a chip in a card game.
How did republicans become so despicable? I was trying to reason with myself that each of us has redeeming qualities, but this story knocked some sense into me. If you support any of the policy makers making moves like this, you are awful.
