As the death toll in a mass shooting in Texas on Saturday rose to seven, Beto ORourke, the Democratic presidential candidate, used an appearance on live television to denounce Americas epidemic of gun violence as fucked up.
The former congressman from El Paso broke with convention when he told CNNs State of the Union the polite rhetoric deployed by most politicians, of thoughts and prayers, was no longer adequate.
He was speaking hours after a chaotic shooting spree in Odessa and Midland left seven people including the gunman dead and a 17-month-old child shot in the face among more than 20 wounded.
Odessa police spokesman Steve LeSueur announced the rise in deaths from five to seven and said at least one person remained in a life-threatening condition.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) on Monday suggested that a lack of thoughts and prayers is "the single biggest factor" behind mass shootings like the ones that took place in Texas and Ohio last weekend.
"Despite all those who are denouncing the idea of prayers for the victims ... I will continue to pray for the victims and their families and for an end to this mindless violence, and I hope you will, too," Huckabee, who ran for the Republican presidential nominee in 2008 and 2016, wrote in a blog post on his website.
"In fact, amid all the finger-pointing and blame-laying and repulsive attempts to turn these tragedies to political advantage before the bodies are even cold, I would posit that the lack of thought and prayers is probably the single biggest factor in what is behind them," he continued.
Huckabee's comments came after a weekend in which mass shootings in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, left more than 30 people dead. The tragedies have sparked discussions about mass shootings in the U.S. and who or what is to blame.

(43,295 posts)so it says to me they are either 1) still searching for accomplice 2) he's someone important to somebody or too connected to something to release and they have to get their facts together 3) he has a particularly strident manifesto somewhere that they are trying to figure out how to handle 4) something else that my fool brain can't fathom 5) resources are fatigued and stretched thin.
They have barely released that the USPS postal employee was killed in the hijacking. The news media as I have seen basically says "hijacked a postal vehicle."
Don't really know what to make of it all.
