It's the first step in establishing the U.S. Space Force which would be an entirely new military service dedicated to defense in outer space.
"Before the year is out, the United States will once again send American astronauts into space on American rockets from American soil."
The Trump administration's new Space Command under the Defense Department will officially be up and running on Aug. 29. It's the first new combatant command since U.S. Africa Command was established in 2009.
Vice President Mike Pence made the announcement Tuesday at the sixth meeting of the National Space Council.
The chairman of the joint chiefs of staff said Space Command will be in charge of planning and following through with operations in space. It's the first step in establishing the U.S. Space Force which would be an entirely new military service dedicated to defense in outer space.

So much for peaceful space exploration.

(15,805 posts)for his most excellent adventure in space? Pelosi isn't going to give him a dime. There's been no feasibility study, no impact survey, no expert testimony, no academic white papers, no written policies, no proposed goals or even a rational to-do list.
This is another one of Trump's thoughtless and ill conceived comic book whims. He just wants more people in cool outer space uniforms to line up and salute him on cue. He wants to put his name brand on a "spaceship", christen a fleet of shutter and the build a moon base as the forerunner to Trump's Lunar Tower.

(1,568 posts)but I've yet to hear any sort of rational or coherent arguments about why a "space force" as Trump has laid out makes any sense. I cannot believe the idea of a space force is still in play at all.

There's a lot of resistance to that action within both the Air Force and the government.

I haven't read it all yet, but it seems interesting. Going to have to dig in when I get a chance.

(33,643 posts)The aircraft & weaponry they can bring to bear from distance to blow your ass up might as well be from outer space as far as a civilian is concerned.

(2,596 posts)A patient was telling me someone's house burned because of a "gas explosion". I laughed a little and had to explain that I've always thought that a "gas explosion" was going to be the standard excuse when someone was taken out by a drone.
Another scary version is just destroying someone's life. I read a book called "Operation Bite Back" about activists that were trying to free animals raised for fur. The coordinated campaign to destroy the guy was truly scary. And even though Obama had 8 years Leonard Peltier still sits in prison
