(CNN)Less than two weeks before his scheduled trip to Denmark, President Donald Trump announced on Twitter that he has postponed his visit to Copenhagen after the Danish Prime Minister disputed his interest in buying Greenland as "absurd."
"Denmark is a very special country with incredible people, but based on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen's comments, that she would have no interest in discussing the purchase of Greenland, I will be postponing our meeting scheduled in two weeks for another time," he wrote Tuesday night.
He continued, "The Prime Minister was able to save a great deal of expense and effort for both the United States and Denmark by being so direct. I thank her for that and look forward to rescheduling sometime in the future!"
Trump has on multiple occasions brought up buying Greenland from the Danish government and the White House counsel's office has looked into the possibility, two sources told CNN last week.
On Sunday, Trump confirmed his interest in buying the country, telling reporters that Greenland is hurting Denmark.................................

(101,311 posts)Lene Balleby, Head of Communications at the Danish royal house said: That was a surprise! We are simply lost for words.
It is very rare that a state visit is cancelled less than two weeks before its suppose to take place.
The Danish royal houses staff had already started to prepare a wide range of tasks to welcome the US President.
For example, BT reports food and drinks had already been organised for the state dinner hosted by the Queen.

The Express is a tabloid, and so it BT in Denmark, but I believe 'shock' would be right; you don't snub a head of state because the politicians of her country rightly called an idea that Trump's own handlers thought might be a joke as 'absurd'. Especially with 2 weeks to go.
I don't think Trump is going to get any invitations from non-autocratic countries from now on.

(1,425 posts)And Trump is a wholly owned subsidiary of Putin. See NY Times, Aug 4, 2015. "Russia Stakes New Claim to Expanse in the Arctic" https://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/05/world/europe/kremlin-stakes-claim-to-arctic-expanse-and-its-resources.html?_r=0&fbclid=IwAR0L9sMxfb9MjlWmrahpCNacSjR_9iYxkJT1hGxcTCE7fIHtCsOocNICCFM
It's probably behind a paywall. A few excerpts:
"Russia formally staked a claim on Tuesday to a vast area of the Arctic Ocean, including the North Pole.
If the United Nations committee that arbitrates sea boundaries accepts Russias claim, the seabed will be subject to Moscows oversight on economic matters, including fishing and oil and gas drilling, though Russia will not have full sovereignty.
Denmark submitted an expanded claim of its own to the United Nations last year, seeking control of economic activity around the North Pole and asserting that the area is part of the continental shelf jutting north from Greenland, not Russia.
The claims are aimed at a section of the Arctic Ocean known as the doughnut hole, a Texas-size area of international waters encircled by the existing economic-zone boundaries of shoreline countries. Conservation groups have opposed any claims to the waters of the doughnut hole, saying they would bring harmful oil drilling and fishing. They point to a recent international accord to ban commercial trawling in the area as the better way forward in the far north."

Of course, he has to be a total; asshole about everything and shun the queen. Probably a good thing - I don't know if they were prepared to have the Big Macs and Whoppers he would have demanded at the state dinner.

(101,311 posts)This is as good an explanation as any for why this seems personal to him - he wants a 'legacy':
Once you count territorial possessions, the United States is Earths fourth-largest country, geographically, behind Russia, Canada, and China. Purchasing Greenland would make us a solid #2.
Would anyone really put such an idiotic motive past Trump? He wants the biggest military parade and biggest wall. He lies about having the biggest audiences and largest fortune and greatest electoral victory. (If Trump consciously lies, which I doubt; I suspect he thinks that whatever he thinks is true.) Hes said that the World Trade Center attacks made his Trump Tower the biggest building in downtown Manhattan. He brags about TV ratings and Twitter followers. Lets not forget his ridiculously oversized neckties.
Maybe this is some kind of Freudian thing, or simply the twisted mindset of aspirationally rich people keeping up with the Joneses taken to psychotic extremes. I dont particularly care. Serial killers are far more interesting than rich people (and ultimately far less dangerous).
In any case, this explanation makes the most sense to me. So Im officially calling it the best. And the biggest.
https://franklycurious.com/wp/2019/08/18/trump-greenland/
The Wikipedia article on country area has a huge footnote about how to measure the USA and China (Canada is larger than both if water is counted, smaller than both if only land is): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_area#cite_note-3rd-largest-14
He wants something they can write about in the, dear-god, "Trump Presidential Library". Or have pictures of, anyway. Only the Mercator projection used (Trump wouldn't understand map projections, but he'd know that the 'real map' is the one showing his purchase as the largest).
