Man in pick-up truck drives into group of ICE protesters in Rhode Island

Source: NBC News

Amy Anthony, a spokesperson for Never Again Action, told NBC News that earlier in the evening, a group of around 400 people had gathered outside the facility to protest, the second time the group has planned an action outside the detention center.

As the protest died down, about 30 demonstrators linked arms and sat in the facility’s parking lot entrances to block staff from leaving or entering, Anthony said. The group was peacefully protesting when seemingly out of nowhere a man in a pick-up truck drove towards them, slowing down just before hitting the crowd, footage of the incident shows. The video then shows the driver continuing to drive through the crowd, as protesters scream and try to get away from the car.

Anthony described the interaction that took place just before 10 p.m. on Wednesday as “terrifying,” saying the “brazen act" shows the driver of truck believed he is "beyond reproach.” She said several people suffered non-life threatening injuries from the incident, and some were brought to a local hospital, including an elderly protester whose leg was fractured during the incident. She also added a father was in the crowd with his three children.

I am so ashamed of my state. We have been blue for decades but this incident proves that there are right-wing crazy nut jobs always waiting in the background. They are ready to just disrupt, destroy and kill if necessary.

This is completely unacceptable in the president is complicit.

Thomas Woodworth

Thomas Woodworth is a correctional officer at Wyatt Detention Facility who drove his pickup truck into anti-ICE protesters at the Rhode Island federal prison during a protest against the Trump administration’s immigration policies led by the Jewish group Never Again Action. Woodworth, a 53-year-old captain at the privately run facility, has been placed on leave amid an investigation into his actions.

Two people were injured by Woodworth’s truck and three others were hospitalized from injuries suffered in the aftermath of the protesters being rammed at the entrance to the prison in Central Falls, Rhode Island, Never Again Action organizers say. Correctional officers used pepper spray on the protesters after they were hit by the truck, video shows.

The protest is one of many being held by Never Again Action around the country. It began about 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, at Jenks Park in Central Falls, as protesters gathered and marched to the Wyatt Detention Facility, the Providence Journal reports. The peaceful protest turned violent about 9:50 p.m. when Woodworth drove his pickup truck into protesters blocking a parking lot at the entrance to the prison’s employee parking lot.

No protesters were arrested. About 600 protesters took part in the gathering, with about 30 blocking the entrance to the parking lot, the Boston Herald reports. The Never Again Action group has used #JewsAgainstICE as they’ve led dozens of protests at ICE facilities around the country, demanding better treatment of detainees and for immigration policies to be changed.

He attempted to injure/harm them with his vehicle.

The majority of cops/law enforcement are right wing thugs.

Kapernick was correct, America simply doesn't like the truth.

Since we all know the investigation to follow will, at most, result in a couple weeks' suspension for this asshole, the only justice will come from the inevitable civil suits. Hope it bankrupts the tRump-humper! Time for him to start selling off his MAGAt merchandise...pennies on the dollar...ha ha!

6. What is it about pick up trucks?

There have been several times, since the 2016 election that individuals in pick up trucks either (1) drive slow in front of my car, then when I safely pass on the left, they get pissed and try to run me off the road, or (2) a pick up truck is in a lane required to yield to my lane during a merging traffic situation, where they get pissed because I don't left them go in front of me. The last time, I was with my family (wife and and 2 kids) a drive in a pick up truck got upset and came from our rear, around my left side as he passed us on the left, proceeded to try and run us off the road. So I thought to myself, 'this is ridiculous - if he wants my driver side panel, he can have it, and we can deal with this right now'. So I did not move out of my lane, and he clipped our left front panel. My wife took a picture of his license plate, and my oldest daughter made sure to memorize his description. The driver of the truck looked surprised that I did not let him run us off, and immediately moved across 3 lanes to stop and turn off the road as he gave me the finger. We did not pursue the idiot but immediately reported the incident to law enforcement, had an officer in the search the area where the pick up driver turned into. The officer called us while she was searching the area for more information about the driver and the incident. Another officer met us and information, pictures, etc. for a report.

Myself not being personally privy to the pick up 'folks' is there some sort of thing they have about using pick up trucks to harass, etc.? My wife used to drive a Prius and regularly got 'smoked out' by truckers and pick up drivers who modified their exhaust systems to blow black exhaust at will.

Maybe just coincidences, but wondering if it is really a thing?

--and I hope others respond. I started noticing this big-angry-pickup phenomenon in 2017 and it persists. Never any obnoxious bumper stickers or other clues that they're going to lose it--always driven by a white man with an angry look on his face.
I've witnessed two separate occasions where the trucks have forced cars off the road. They were both unremarkable ICE sedans. Both times it was during rush hour traffic on an interstate, and I did not see the sedans doing anything to provoke the response. Both times I was moving too quickly (in my Prius--which has never been targeted) to stop and call police and I couldn't see license plate number or any other identifying features.
I mentioned this to a friend who commutes on an interstate daily and she said, "Yes! The pickup trucks! What is it?"
Someone moved into a house on our street who drives one. I find myself wary--I am now a big-pickup-truck bigot. Need to work on that.

Something to be careful about, and I am resolving to not allow them to run me off the road, and careful to drive particularly safe around them. I am always very careful with motorcyclists - I want them in front of me so that I don't forget they are around me because I just don't want to hurt anyone who is as vulnerable as a motorcyclist. I am going to start doing the same for the big pickup trucks, but I am going to refuse to let them run me off and keeping my phone handy for picture taking.

I don't blame you for working on your bigotry. It is a good reminder that life is too short, and these times call for extra patience. I always tell my girls - let the other person have the heart attack.

Only once in awhile have I been on a highway (speed limit 55), been going the speed limit, and had a pickup try to force me out of my lane.

Odd thing is that the last time it was a correctional officer who lives on my country road. I was about to turn left off the 4-lane when he forced me out of the left lane and turned left himself. Yes, my blinker was on. He is just a jerk.

I have taken 4 long road trips lately and other drivers of much bigger SUVs and pickups frequently tried to force me to go faster when I was on the interstate in the right (slow) lane. Speed limit 70 and my speed was 75. I drive a Subaru Crosstrek, a so-called compact SUV, which is really a car.

I haven't had that problem with truckers. Perhaps because I'm rarely on the interstate.

For some people, this is a thing. Just not for the vast majority in my area.
