Romney stands by message in secret video
Source: USA Today
Mitt Romney said tonight he stands by his message in a secretly taped video, in which he is heard saying that 47% of Americans will vote for President Obama because they are "dependent upon government."
In brief remarks to reporters, Romney said his argument was not "elegantly stated." But his point, he said, is that Obama relies on the government to help people while his approach is rooted in free enterprise.
---
"There are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47% who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what."

This will make the Freepers proud of him.
They see nothing wrong with his statement.

(18,648 posts)I mean Obama as president is the primary thing we have to have.
But if we don't own Congress we still won't be able to move ahead but that's going to be tough.
We'd have to get a majority in the House and 60% of the Senate to be able to get anything done at all.
Otherwise the GOP will continue to block every act of governance that is attempted.
I don't expect them to change their ways.
They have a tendency to double down on losing strategies instead of changing them.
It's insane.

(5,842 posts)Romney hasn't done anything to remotely pivot back to the middle since he got the nomination. His only chance for victory is to appeal to the rabidly anti-Obama voters and hope there are just enough independent voters who are motivated by their own economic concerns to give him the electoral votes he needs.

(174 posts)It was awesome. Here is a quote straight from - http://www.RepublicansAreADisease.com - Cenk Uygur: The problem is your party. Your party and your ideas suck. They appeal to the rich, and your ideas are the same as always. Deregulate for the rich. Tax cuts for the rich. Start more wars. These are not popular ideas. You could have a different candidate, you could have a different strategy, it wouldnt matter. Because your party sucks
Cenk is right. It isn't Romney. It is Republicans and their "screw regular Americans to help the rich" policies.
Cenk, as usual was on fire.

The danger is, the gloves are well and truly off. They have no more to gain from trying to pretend they aren't evil assholes. All they can do is double down on the "nasty parasites" thing and hope that they can somehow eke out a thin majority of allowed voters.
Sides are fucking chosen, now. There's not much room for middle ground anymore. I hope like hell the good guys win, because this could be seriously fucked. Or maybe it'll all blow over again, for a while. I suppose that's possible too. Maybe preferable, for people alive today.

I mean, come on, I don't think I've ever seen a Presidential candidate whose answer to figuratively being caught with his pants down is to pull his underwear down!! (7,404 posts)Harry Reid has said that a reliable source has told him that Romney paid no taxes for 10 years while at Bain. Does Romney's disdain for the 47% include himself. Romney needs to release those tax returns so we know if he was saying these disparaging remarks about himself. Also, Romney has said that "corporations are people, my friend". We all know that GE has had several years where it paid no federal income taxes so is Romney also including "people" like GE in this group of deadbeats.

(32,723 posts)There was an interview between Tim Russert and Michael Chertov where Russert asked why the government didn't provide transportation and the deer in the headlights look showed that they didn't think they had to.
In every other country in the world it would be a no brainer to get the citizens out of harms way but Chertov didn't even KNOW it was their responsibility and he was appalled that they were expected to do it for free, not to mention they had to provide shelter including food and water and medical care.
The very things Romney is pissed about.
Can you picture if we were hit with a nuke? Millions of burn victims and Romney saying they're expecting a free ride.

Being that both parties are stating that their plan is for the "middle class", please define middle class in terms of income range and aspirations. Please note, the national household median income in about $50K a year, and $250K is the entry level for the 3%.
I hope one of them nails your tail to the ground with that one. At least Obama will sound like he's done his homework.

(12,001 posts)He goes on to say, "Ill never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
He could arguably have finessed and defended the point that people who get substantial benefits from the government are unlikely to vote for a candidate who is looking to make the government less generous.
But that tag line takes away the wiggle room and makes clear what he thinks of that segment of the population.

we are tired of getting trickled on while the rich and infamous accrue even more wealth at our expense and the expense of the country. they are not asked to sacrifice nothing-nada, but yet they reap the rewards of lucrative government contracts, subsidies and basically betting on WS against our own.
yeah, romney, without those government programs, more people would be on the streets, children would be starving and the elderly would be dying in numbers. I can see romney's utopia, hiring a clean up crew to drag the dead bodies off the streets, dying of exposure and starvation. Oh wait, his solution is we can all join the church!!!! ain't gonna happen.
