Gavin Newsom blames Trump, Republicans for 'culture of gun violence' after Gilroy shooting

Source: Sacramento Bee

Gov. Gavin Newsom blamed President Donald Trump and Republicans for a “culture of gun violence” during a Monday appearance in Gilroy, where a gunman killed three people at a food festival the night before.

The Democratic governor said the president has failed to provide moral leadership on the issue and take on the “machismo” culture perpetuating mass shootings.

“It’s just sickening... the leadership today that just turns a blind eye and won’t do a damn thing to address these issues,” he told reporters Monday, according to a transcript provided by his office. “What’s goddamned absent in this country right now is moral authority.”

...

“You have a right to bear arms but not weapons of goddamned mass destruction,” Newsom said. “You need these damn things for hunting? Give me a break.”

And NRA money (but that's running out).

I wish more Democrats dared speak as rough as Newsom did. The last three years have shown the ineffectiveness of "when they go low we go high."

proximity/convenience sprouts a lot of relationships which don't necessarily survive, and are not necessarily wise on the part of all parties.

Also, she seems... rather opportunistic. (I don't know what else to call a person who publicly engages with a relationship with the son of the POTUS amidst said scion's maybe-divorce/maybe-not-divorce proceedings)

11. The actual reality of Newsom-Pelosi-Getty famlies goes back generations

and it is strange. Very strange, and fascinating

https://calmatters.org/commentary/gavin-newsoms-keeping-it-all-in-the-family/

Snip ......Newsom is succeeding someone who could be considered his quasi-uncle, since his inauguration continues the decades-long saga of four San Francisco families intertwined by blood, by marriage, by money, by culture and, of course, by politics – the Browns, the Newsoms, the Pelosis and the Gettys.

The connections date back at least 80 years, to when Jerry Brown’s father, Pat Brown, ran for San Francisco district attorney, losing in 1939 but winning in 1943, with the help of his close friend and Gavin Newsom’s grandfather, businessman William Newsom.

Ties among the Brown, Newsom, Pelosi and Getty families date back three generations. Click on image for a larger view. Graphic for CALmatters by Nazneen Rydhan-Foster.

Fast forward two decades. Gov. Pat Brown’s administration developed Squaw Valley for the 1960s winter Olympics and afterward awarded a concession to operate it to William Newsom and his partner, John Pelosi.

One of the Pelosis’ sons, Paul, married Nancy D’Alesandro, who went into politics and has now reclaimed speakership of the House of Representatives. Another Pelosi son married William Newsom’s daughter, Barbara. Until they divorced, that made Nancy Pelosi something like an aunt by marriage to Gavin Newson (Nancy Pelosi’s brother-in-law was Gavin Newsom’s uncle). Snip.....

5. I blame Trump too. The two kids the Nazi killed in Gilroy both had Hispanic surnames.

community, hence the Gilroy Garlic festival

and it has many hispanic heritage residents... I don't know the percentage but I would guess 40% or more.

One doesn't have to go to the festival to kill kids of hispanic ethnicity...
OTOH... it is the biggest event in that city and likely the biggest food based festival in Northern CA.

I've lived here 39 years now (off and on, but mostly on) and I've avoided going to this festival that entire time because of the crowds and traffic. And garlic, while interesting, doesn't really float my boat. They have garlic everything there... garlic ice cream, etc.

Yeah, he is a racist Nazi POS... but I think he targeted the festival because of the size of the event and the news coverage that he would get for it... inspired by the Las Vegas shooting maybe.

10. We simply don't deliver the message correctly to win independent votes. And solve this problem.

He was so damn close to nailing it.

Now the two people that have ruined our country, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, will go on for the next 10 years about how we think automatic rifles and nuclear bombs are the same thing and swing voters will hear those comparisons and think Democrats are crazy.

It's all about the message and how we say it. And we just can't seem to deliver the perfect message.

We need to talk about how it's also Republican children who were being gunned down on a daily basis. And not just from mass shootings but from daily firearm homicides. Or that anyone's kid could be next up.
