#NeverAgainIsNow: 36 Arrested As Hundreds of Jewish Protesters Block Road To Immigrant Detention Ctr
Source: Common Dreams
"This is what solidarity looks like." Rejecting the notion that denouncing the Trump administration's immigrant detention centers as "concentration camps" does harm to the memory of the Holocaust, 200 Jewish people demonstrated at a facility in New Jersey Sunday evening and demanded the release of the thousands of immigrants in U.S. custody.
Grassroots group Never Again Action called for all detention centers to be closed and for the U.S. government to protect asylum seekers and undocumented immigrantsinstead of sending Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) into communities where the agency has arrested hundreds so far this year in raids.
The group reported that 36 participants were arrested for blocking the road to the Elizabeth Detention Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. "I have to do whatever is in my power to disrupt ICE, to close these camps, to provide permanent protection, and to ensure that 'never again' means never again," said Rebecca Oliver, a demonstrator who was arrested.
Holding signs reading, "Never again for anyone" and "Jews demand freedom for immigrants," the demonstrators stressed the need to recognize the parallels between the Trump administration's arrests of undocumented immigrants and detention of asylum seekers and the treatment of Jewish people and other marginalized groups by the Nazi regime in the 1930s and 40s. -MORE...

Protester Tae Phoenix said, "I'm a Jewish Latina. The military camps where my people are being held today are concentration camps; just like the camps my people were held in 75 years ago were concentration camps." "That's why I'm here. That's why we're here."
"As Jews, we were taught to never let anything like the Holocaust happen again. We refuse to wait and see what happens here now." -- Never Again Action
- Three dozen protesters were arrested at a demonstration where about 200 Jewish people blocked the entrance to a detention center in Elizabeth, New Jersey on Sunday.

(14,570 posts)is happening here in our own country and the parallels with Nazi Germany are striking, right to the profit per head.
It does NOT denigrate the Holocaust, nor is it in any way anti-Semitic to tell the truth about these camps and the awful conditions the people concentrated in them are facing.
We need to tell it like it is.

(383 posts)Of the cop/BP agent. I thought visible tattoos had to be covered with an arm sleeve or something else while on duty. At least that was the rules I remember 20 yrs ago. Times have changed.

(18,624 posts)In different clothing he'd fit right in at a skinhead rally and it seems a lot of cops look that way now.
Perhaps there's something about an authoritative job where one can carry a gun that attracts the type. Now that I read that...

(6,446 posts)it does say to me he has disposable income though. Tattoos can be expensive. It looks like some of the protesters have tats too... my grandma was upset with me for getting a tat because i now can't be buried in the same jewish cemetery as her.

(18,624 posts)....or that the religious leaders officially discouraged it. That must be why Jerry Seinfeld doesn't have any neck tattoos.
Joking aside, my kids and a couple grand kids wear art too, but it's the overall image with the sleeve and shaved head that make this and many other cops appear as White Nats to me.

(6,446 posts)with some of the sweetest liberals. 80% of whom have sleeves and shaved heads. When you always wear plain t-shirts art is a good way to introduce yourself and when you're in constant heat environment and health-code says you need to wear a hairnet (unless you have a shaved head)... well let's just say we have a different impression.

*Join us (Jews + immigrants + people from all backgrounds) on Tuesday for an action in Boston to demand an end to ICEs violence. WEAR WHITE! Meet at 4pm at the New England Holocaust Memorial for a program, march at 5:30pm.** On Sunday June 30, hundreds of Jews are coming together in the New York area to put a stop to ICE. We are answering their call to action, and taking a stand in our own community. We are Jews, immigrants, and allies with many identities. We have seen this before. Never again means never again para nadie, for anyone. Now is the time for action and we need mass participation to shut down business as usual. As Jews, weve been taught to never let anything like the Holocaust happen again. From our many Jewish histories of detention, violence, and migration, both in Europe and all over the world, we know that weve seen this before. But the legacies of violence, white supremacy, detention and genocide are alive and well in our communities. Right now in our country and in Massachusetts, there are families being torn apart by ICE, an agency created to dehumanize them. There are children being detained in horrific conditions. There are adults and children dying at the border as they flee violence. What we mean when we say Never Again is never again para nadie (for anyone.) We mean that no one, no person or group, should experience the trauma of family separation, the violence of detention, the pain and deadliness of degradation and dehumanization, or genocide. We DEMAND dignity and permanent protection for all immigrants/migrants and safe pathways for those seeking refuge from places plagued by colonialism and violence. We DEMAND an end to detention #CloseTheCamps and the abolition of ICE #AbolishICE Never again is now. For questions about accessibility, please reach out to Aliza at: <aliza.schwartz15@gmail.com>

(271 posts)In fact, people in all countries should demonstrate in front of the American embassies in their countries. Unfortunately, it isn't only in America that horrendous things are happening to people. Too many people are dying because of the actions or inactions of their governments.
