U.S. News In Historic First, Trump Crosses Into North Korea in Meeting With Kim
Source: Haartetz
U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met at the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas on Sunday, raising hopes for a revival of stalled nuclear talks.
Trump arrived in Seoul late on Saturday for talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in after attending a Group of 20 summit in Osaka, Japan, during which he made a surprise, spur-of-the-moment offer to meet Kim.
Trump arrived at the DMZ on Sunday, accompanied by Moon. They visited a guard post in the northernmost part of the South Korean side of the DMZ, looking into the North, where Trump will speak with U.S. and South Korean servicemen.
Moon, who will accompany Trump on the visit to the heavily fortified border, said that a third summit between the United States and North Korea would depend on what happened on Sunday. Moon said he and Trump agreed on the significance of "simultaneous, parallel" implementation of an agreement Trump and Kim reached at their first summit in Singapore last year.

Recalling someone here has a photo of his big backside from the visit. I just saw it, and it looks as if he has a giant city's phone book in the back of his pants.
Oh, god, they keep re-running it, now. He keeps strolling slowly, casually to the neutral area, taking far too much time, maybe envisioning it a Great Moment In History, (pfffffft.) and Kim just walked rapidly, looking much more like a human being, to shake hands.

Summary
Donald Trump has invited Kim Jong-un to visit the US during talks at Korean peninsulas demilitarised zone after he became the first American president to step onto North Korean soil.
The meeting was organised yesterday, both leaders confirmed, after Trump tweeted Kim Jong-un suggesting they meet and say Hello(?)! while Trump was in the region for the G20 summit in Osaka.
Trump travelled to the DMZ with South Korean leader Moon Jae-in, while the three had an hour-long tri-lateral meeting at Peace House.

Trump announced that new teams would be set up by the three parties to the negotiations. Asked by journalists if he believed that North Koreas previous negotiators were still alive, he replied: I think so.

With the dust settling on panmunjom, theres time now to pick up on some of the other subplots and details, in particular the cast-list of who else was present.
According to Anna Fifield, Beijing bureau chief for the Washington Post, those on the sidelines for the handshake included: Ivanka Trump, Jared Kushner, the US conservative commentator and broadcaster Tucker Carlson, North Korean foreign minister Ri Yong Ho and his deputy Choe Song Hui, as well as the North Korean singer and Hyon Song Wol.

(2,172 posts)Ronald Reagan would have never done this. The world has turned upside down. Kim has American blood on his hands but Trump does not care and wants his photo op. I just don't see Kim ever giving up his nukes. The Trump cult just loves this but if Obama had done it they would be wanting him executed for treason. The GOP has lost all self respect.

If Obama had done this, DU would be gushing about how finally we had a president who was willing to talk and solve problems rather than continue the failed policies of the previous 50+ years.
I'm not suggesting that Trump is going to solve the N Korea issue, or that this is anything more than a photo-op. I agree that Kim isn't going to give up his nuclear program. However, if Trump makes _any_ progress in normalizing or making better our relations with North Korea, that's substantially more progress than any previous president of either party. I'll happily give him credit for that if he can pull it off. The rest of his presidency is a disaster, but I'm not going to criticize "let's try something different" with North Korea, because what we've been doing is clearly not working.

(1,301 posts)The dynamics of that meeting would have been entirely different.
All Kim has to do is to tell Trump how great he is, how wonderful his brain, how beautiful his flaxen hair, how hes the best president evah. All Trump needs is praise and a few false promises. He believes he has all of Kims admiration and respect. Theyre buds nowof course he can get a deal.
He, and we, are being played the fools.

(7,947 posts)Now Kim knows he can do anything short of blowing up Tokyo and Trump will gush over him.
This isn't progress. Any president in the past could have gushed over Kim, but giving power to this dictator -- treating him as an equal or even more-- just emboldens him.
Nothing that is done just to bloat Trump's ego is likely to end well-- because it has nothing to do with bettering the world or the country. It's just about making him feel potent, and giving his plastic daughter another showcase for her shiny hair.

(2,391 posts)It's giving Kim exactly what he wants and disposing of any leverage we may have had for change. And trump suggesting to Japan that he may want to end the US/Japan defense agreement before kissing Kim's ass is especially heinous.
Here's trump telling us how he really feels.

I did not want Obama talking to Kim unless a deal had already been negotiated and was ready to sign. I'm not much on murderous dictators.
