Bolsonaro's G-20 Trip Hits Snag: Brazillian Crewman Arrested With 86 Lbs. Of Cocaine

Source: NPR

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, known for his hard-line policies on law and order, began his trip to Japan for the G-20 summit on an embarrassing note after a crewman in an advance party was accused of carrying cocaine in his luggage.

Police arrested the crewman in Seville, Spain, on Tuesday after a Brazilian air force plane made a stopover on its way to Japan. Spanish authorities say the crewman, identified by Brazilian and Spanish media as Sgt. Manoel Silva Rodrigues, was carrying 39 kilos of cocaine — 86 pounds. According to Spanish news outlet ABC, the drug was divided into 37 blocks — and the crewman told Civil Guard agents that he was carrying cheese.

The president followed on a separate jet, which reportedly altered its route after Rodrigues' arrest to avoid Seville and instead stop in Lisbon, Portugal, according to Brazilian news outlet Folha de S. Paulo.

Rodrigues serves as a flight steward who has worked internationally dozens of times, including trips with three different Brazilian presidents, according to Folha. In a note about the arrest, Brazil's air force says that when Bolsonaro returns to Brazil, his plane will not pass through Seville but through Seattle in the U.S. -MORE...

"We will not tolerate such disrespect to our country!" Bolsonaro said. Narcotics on a Brazilian military plane is a blow to the president, who "was elected on a promise of cracking down on crime- especially Brazil's rampant cocaine industry," NPR's Philip Reeves reports from Rio de Janeiro. "The president is also a former army captain who often praises his military for its professionalism."

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is calling for severe punishment after 86 pounds of cocaine were found in the luggage of an advance plane for his trip to Japan. Bolsonaro (center) is seen here preparing to leave for the G-20 meeting in Osaka.

he looks as though he was dressed by the orange anus's valet for the UK trip, ill-fitting clothes, untucked shirt and all. Must be an authoritarian thug thing.

Oh, and oopsie on the hardline law-and-order shtick while a member of your crew is smuggling narcotics.

got done with a monumental rant and is now pissed that his party materials and probable pay-off to someone at the gig... maybe someone with tiny hands?

And he will be in a precarious position while there, not that he wasn't on the side-glance list already, this will set the stage for his unpleasant interactions. Bet he won't be such a bully now.

They'll no doubt offer him a nice plea deal if he incriminates Lula da Silva, or his former officials.

I wonder how long this has been going on, and where the 86 pounds of coke was going once it got to Japan.
Probably delivering it to someone else who would be at the G20 conference.
Ya think he'd be a bit more discrete about it. That's a lot of dope to lose.
Any bets this guy dies in prison?
Assuming he live long enough to get to prison.
