Same-sex couple in child custody battle after split: Oklahoma Supreme Court issues landmark ruling

The Oklahoma Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling Tuesday establishing when the nonbiological parent formerly in a same-sex relationship could seek custody, visitation and support of a child.
Consistent with the best interests of children in similar scenarios, we hold that non-biological same-sex parents may attain complete parity with biological parents, the court said in an 8-1 ruling.
The case originated in Tulsa County.
Lori Schnedler and Heather Nicole Lee were a couple for about 10 years before Oklahoma began recognizing same-sex marriages in 2014, according to the ruling.
