Democratic leader concedes on Oregon climate bill after Republican walkout
Source: The Hill
The Democratic leader of Oregon's state Senate on Tuesday said that a sweeping climate bill did not have votes needed to pass after Republican Senators walked out to avoid the vote.
"What I'm about to say I say of my own free will. No one has told me to say this," Senate President Peter Courtney (D) said Tuesday.
"HB 2020 does not have the votes on the Senate floor. That will not change."

Sen. President Peter Courtney to Republicans: We do not have the votes for the cap-and-trade bill. #orleg #orpol
Young climate activists in the Senate gallery get up and turn their backs as Sen. Courtney announces the cap-and-trade bill is likely dead. #orleg
Leaving the Senate floor, senators were visibly upset. Sen. Majority Leader Ginny Burdick, D-Portland, said there was "no deal that I know of." And Sen. Steiner Hayward said it was clear Courtney was broadcasting a msg to the Republicans in hiding. #orleg #orpol
Senators weren't the only angry ones. The young climate activists came hauling down the stairs from the Senate chamber. "They have the votes. They just don't have the courage," Shilpa Joshi said. "They are jeopardizing our future." #orleg #orpol
Sen. Tim Knopp, R-Bend, who is presumably still in Idaho: We need clarification. What does that mean? Does it mean its dead until the 2020 session? Is the governor going to take it up in a special session? We need more clarification." #orleg #orpol

(2,195 posts)and call the vote. Doesn't matter what repugs would think.
As for the pearl clutchers, bothsiderists and chuckies of the world;
this is the new reality created by repugs, so take your "concerns"
and take a long walk off a short pier.

(37,748 posts)About fifteen years ago, a group of twelve or so Texas Democrats traveled to Oklahoma to avoid a quorum in Austin to ensure a redistricting bill didn't make it to the floor for a vote.
A hew and cry did go out... Tom DeLay (remember that little toad?) asked US Marshals and Homeland Security to find and arrest them.

(260 posts)The guy you saw on the news saying something like: Better send bachelors, is my state senator here in Oregon. I sent him this this morning:
Sadly I am a constituent of yours. I wonder how I could have gotten such a belligerent slacker as you to represent me in such a demanding position. Someone who spouts threats to law enforcement and refuses to do your job, or even show up for work.
Show up for work, do your job. A lot of other work remains to be done.
<my name removed>
PS. Almost forgot, you're a feckless man. According to news reports the Republican caucus promised last month that there would be no more walkouts. Can't even keep your word...
That was before I heard the Senate majority leader capitulate, damn, I would have tried to raise the fine for not showing up to $10000 a day.

My words are clear. I no longer have faith in the various governing bodies within the United States and I am no longer willing to call those supporting the GOP fellow countrymen and countrywomen. Our differences have become, to put it mildly, irreconcilable.

(9,971 posts)We have reached a state in this country where neither side has any respect for the other. I see no way to bridge this gap because I certainly will not change my mind about what I believe to be the true purpose of government, and I think those on the other side feel the same. Some people have proposed a split into two countries, but I think the complications of trying to divide the country would be overwhelming.
We have become the Divided States of America. I hope younger people have some good ideas about how to get along better because the current situation is lose-lose for everybody.
