Almost 300 migrant children removed from Texas facility described as 'appalling'
Source: NBC News
The children who were removed were being held at a border station in Clint, Texas. Some were wearing dirty clothes covered in mucus or even urine, said Elora Mukherjee, the director of the Immigrants Rights Clinic at Columbia Law School. Teenage mothers wore clothing stained with breast milk. None of the children had access to soap or toothpaste, she said.
Almost every child I spoke with had not showered or bathed since they crossed the border some of them more than three weeks ago, she said. There is a stench that emanates from some of the children because they havent had an opportunity to put on clean clothes and to take a shower.
The children have been taken to a tent detention camp also in El Paso, Texas, where they will remain under the custody of Border Patrol until they can be placed with the Department of Health and Human Services, the DHS officials said. The Associated Press first reported on the conditions at the facility.
Frye also said of the children they spoke to, almost every kid had some sort of illness or had been sick. She said the team sent a doctor back to the facility after the visit, and six children were ultimately sent to the hospital.

No soap and no showers is a sure fire way to spread colds and flu. More horrific details at the link, like a 17 year old wheelchair bound mom recovering from an emergency c-section, her baby sick and listless and both of them covered in dirt with no way to bathe.
Not sure moving these kids from a filthy concrete ice box cage to a sweltering tent city in Texas in late June is an improvement...

(9,988 posts)I think I heard that the cost per child per day is over $700 to starve them, not provide basic hygiene needs, and have them sleep outside on dirt or concrete! Put them up at the local Hilton for a fifth of that, and they would be treated far better. Who runs this company that is making millions off taxpayers? This is beyond outrageous. And Trump has the nerve to ask for more money when we know he would divert it to build his wall.

(15,286 posts)Hayes was very frustrated not to get straight answers. It seemed like Burgess lied to the producers about what he intended to say, what he supports or both. No surprise there, either.

(51,557 posts)And Burgess never answered a single question. Very disappointed in Hayes. It seems Hayes was afraid if he called Burgess out, he'd never come on his show again. Burgess is one of Chris Hayes' go to GOP talking heads. I see him on the show often. The dude really is a motor mouth who does nothing but spit out GOP talking points, kinda like Kellyanne Conway. I don't know why these shows let them get away with that shit, other than they're desperate for GOP guests so that they appear "balanced," having bought into that false equivalence bullshit.

Bless his heart, Chris Hayes does try to have honest discussions and examine other points of view with his guests, but 99% of these Rs simply agree to appear on these shows to get out their talking points, not to have a serious conversation about any issue.

Do they put their guns away before diaper changes or bottle feeding? Do they call the kids the same belittling names they use for adults?

(51,557 posts)The United Nations top human rights official on Monday entered the mounting furor over the Trump administrations policy of separating undocumented immigrant children from their parents, calling for an immediate halt to a practice he condemned as abuse.
United States immigration authorities have detained almost 2,000 children in the past six weeks, which may cause them irreparable harm with lifelong consequences, said Zeid Raad al-Hussein, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights.
He cited an observation by the president of the American Association of Pediatrics that locking the children up separately from their parents constituted government-sanctioned child abuse.

Despite the fact that 300 of these kids were 'cared for', they were 'cared for' after being fucking kidnapped by the federal government.
Let that sit there .
And not for nothing, but if we hadn't raised hell about it in the first place, they likely WOULDNT HAVE BEEN CARED FOR, even to this little extent.
At this point, I want both ICE AND CBP cleaned OUT, from top to bottom, and everyone who wants to keep their jobs can pass a psych eval to make sure they're not an outright psychopath .

They dont know where their loved ones are who they crossed the border with, she said.
Many also had family members already in the United States waiting to take them in, she said.
Federal law requires unaccompanied or separated migrant children be transferred to HHS custody within 72 hours, but some children at the Clint facility had been in Border Patrol custody for weeks, she said.
