Pompeo seeks 'global coalition' against Iran

Source: DW

Date 24.06.2019

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo arrived in Jeddah on Monday for talks amid heightened tensions with Iran. The top US diplomat was expected to meet with King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, before flying on for talks in the United Arab Emirates.

Prior to departure on Sunday, Pompeo said that he would seek out a "global coalition" following Iran's downing of an American drone.

"We'll be talking with them about how to make sure that we are all strategically aligned and how we can build out a global coalition," Pompeo said.

He said he would visit the two countries on his way to India, where he begins a visit on Tuesday.

Israel. Everyone else is going to sit this one out, and Russia and China will likely openly assist Iran.

Trump started this mess. Everyone knows that.

temper tantrum? The world has Don figured out: he's nuts. If you want something out of him, you stroke his ego and kiss his ass for a couple of days and you've "made the deal."

Pomp, good luck with that. The way Trump has alienated our allies, why do you think ANYONE would help us now. Hope they all thumb their noses at him.

Russia has been pals with Iran but I can see Putin stabbing Iran in the back to get the price of oil up. It has been said that Russia, economically, is a glorified gas station.

Saudi Arabia is trying to become the dominant power in the region, and Iran stands in their way. How better to weaken Iran than to manipulate an ignorant, greedy president into doing the job for them. We spend billions on war materiel, kill thousands of Iranians with our bombs, and eventually kill thousands of our soldiers in a ground game needed to overthrow the regime. SA sits back and cheers.

Given the tendencies of everyone in Trump's orbit, I'm gonna bet they'll try offering sweet deals to get people on board. Financial aid, lifted tariffs, weapons, etc. Hopefully, no one will take the bite. I'm sure no one in Europe will. But I wouldn't be surprised if they succeed in getting a couple of countries with less-than-stellar reputations to help.

However, no one will probably give substantial military or political support. Trump Co. will get a fig leaf at best.
