Texas Republican: Migrant conditions in his state the 'worst' he's seen
Source: The Hill
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas) said Sunday that conditions in migrant detention facilities in the Lone Star State were the worst hes ever seen.
I've been down there throughout my 15 years in Congress and before that, as a federal prosecutor. This is the worst I've ever seen it, and it has to be taken care of, McCaul said on CBSs Face the Nation.
McCaul also expressed agreement with Vice President Mike Pence, who, during an earlier appearance on the show, said dangerous, unsanitary conditions in detention facilities were the fault of congressional inaction.
I think at a minimum
we have to pass humanitarian aid to take care of these children, McCaul told CBSs Margaret Brennan.

I disagree that the problem is Congressional inaction. These centers are being paid $700 per day per child for this abuse and neglect, and they are putting profit before the welfare of the children.

Let's see an accounting of what the "$700 per day per child" is buying.
And that does not count what the gov't is spending on top of that.
Just what the "$700 per day per child" is paying for.

(4,522 posts)although this part appears BS - they don't mention the real cost: PROFIT for the prison industry.
The reason for the high cost, the official and several former officials told NBC News, is that the sudden urgency to bring in security, air conditioning, medical workers and other government contractors far surpasses the cost for structures that are routinely staffed.

(8,809 posts)Hell, that is almost what Trump charges for a full room in one of his Hotels. I'm surprised he hasn't thought of that.
He could put 8 per room and charge 5600 a night..........

(60,010 posts)I'm convinced Trump has been frantically yelping about needing 5 Billion for the fence because
it's going to go to his cronies, just like the Farmer's Aid money ended up in the wallet of Brazil and China
no goodnicks who own US farms.

(65 posts)This is a total fraudulent waste and an unforgivable cruelty. That is the GOP way of course. Most of those being detained, abused, neglected, tormented (at high cost) could be staying with a relative. Why should taxpayers pay private firms to run a concentration camp that intends to rip us off while ruining lives when the immigrant applicant can stay with family?

Sure. He, the "Christian" that he calls himself and ( "only I can fix it" ) Trump have absolutely nothing to do with
the situation, and can do absolutely nothing about it.
The plight of these children, and the concentration camps in which they have been imprisoned should be the lead story
in the news every single day.
Beyond despicable.

(13,524 posts)How do the private contractors running these hellholes get $700 their per day? They dont even know the childrens names, do they? Do they just take a headcount every day, and count how many bodies are in their putrid facility?
Itd be nice to check the books of these contractors and see what theyre spending all that money on, yeah, sure would

Trump's policy is the direct cause of this.

(14,489 posts)then he would see cruelty and human rights violations in many place across America, not just in immigrant detention centers.
He should visit:
* for-profit prisons and jails,
* homeless camps and shelters,
* mental institutions,
* Native American reservations, and
* segregated high poverty zones in many of our cities.
America as a whole hides from all these things and our greedy economic system encourages it.....

These migrant children should be embraced and treated like our own, not scorned and treated with cruelty.
Please inform us on what you see. This nightmare is finally getting some exposure. Trump must be held to account.

(108,975 posts)According to Genworth's Cost of Care Survey, on average in the United States, a private room in a nursing home costs $8,365 per month, or $275 a day. For a semi-private room, the average cost of a nursing home is $7,441 per month, or $245 a day. Multiple factors affect the overall cost of a nursing home stay. Some of these factors include location, length of stay and care services required.

(779 posts)But, last night I could not sleep thinking about these conditions, and a thought kept coming into my head.
I see on TV all those towns that are crumbling because of people leaving, they have empty properties which will eventually be pulled down.
Many of the immigrants are very clever at building works, if a section of them were chosen for the talents they have, to restore our towns and also live in them, they could be the solution to revitalize our economy, they could get a small living wage while doing it.
But I am just a silly old woman and probably have a silly idea!

(2,262 posts)if there is anything we can do? Other than protesting outside a facility, I wonder if there is anyway we could get help to these kids. I have to say that NPR does a segment on these kids every day. I hear it on Morning Edition and on All Things Considered. One day they played the audio from one of these centers holding these kids and you could hear the babies crying and the toddlers crying, "Papa, papa!" I started crying. That sound haunts me. Can you imagine a baby crying and no one comes?
Today, I wrote to my congresswoman and both senators and told them all I hear is their thundering silence. I cannot believe nothing can be done. Don't they have to let the Red Cross go in and inspect?

(32,626 posts)the GOP? They're as responsible if not more, than Trump. Without them, none of this would be happening. The gall to open his mouth, and blame "Congress" is almost slap-worthy.
