Trump warns Iran of 'obliteration like you've never seen before'

Source: Politico

By MARTIN MATISHAK 06/23/2019 09:04 AM EDT

President Donald Trump warned the United States may launch a devastating military attack on Iran unless it comes to the negotiating table and drops its bid to develop nuclear weapons.

“I'm not looking for war and if there is, it'll be obliteration like you've never seen before. But I'm not looking to do that. But you can't have a nuclear weapon. You want to talk? Good. Otherwise you can have a bad economy for the next three years,” Trump said during an interview with NBC’s “Meet The Press“ airing Sunday.

The president said he’d be willing to sit down with Iranian officials without any pre-conditions.

The comments, made during an interview taped Friday, came the same day Trump confirmed on Twitter that he called off a retaliatory strike on Iran at the last minute Thursday night. He said he decided that the potential cost of human lives was “not proportionate to shooting down an unmanned drone.”

Trump: No preconditions on talks with Iran

BY ZACK BUDRYK - 06/23/19 09:01 AM EDT

President Trump in an interview broadcast Sunday expressed willingness to speak with Iranian officials without preconditions.

“I'm not looking for war and if there is, it'll be obliteration like you've never seen before. But I'm not looking to do that. But you can't have a nuclear weapon,” Trump told NBC’s Chuck Todd on "Meet the Press."

Asked if this would include preconditions, Trump said “not as far as I'm concerned. No preconditions.”

In the same interview, Trump called his national security advisor John Bolton “absolutely a hawk” and said he wanted “hawks” and “doves” equally represented in his administration.

You do not year up a treaty, threaten to destroy a country, then demand they negotiate with you.

That is not diplomacy. That is outright threats of war that has no happy outcomes.

Claiming stuff trying to look important and powerful in his mind, but really is weak and powerless. He's a bs'er and blowhard that's so insecure and impotent now he has to over and over lie and claim everyone should cower down to his demands. Putin told him to not do it, so you can bet this is just an act trying to look good for his base, but makes him look ever more ignorant of foreign policies, just like he's done nothing with NK and Kim. Because that's what putin wanted.

Fintan O’Toole: Trial runs for fascism are in full flow
Babies in cages were no ‘mistake’ by Trump but test-marketing for barbarism
Tue, Jun 26, 2018, 05:00

https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/fintan-o-toole-trial-runs-for-fascism-are-in-full-flow-1.3543375

snip...

One of the basic tools of fascism is the rigging of elections – we’ve seen that trialled in the election of Trump, in the Brexit referendum and (less successfully) in the French presidential elections. Another is the generation of tribal identities, the division of society into mutually exclusive polarities. Fascism does not need a majority – it typically comes to power with about 40 per cent support and then uses control and intimidation to consolidate that power. So it doesn’t matter if most people hate you, as long as your 40 per cent is fanatically committed. That’s been tested out too. And fascism of course needs a propaganda machine so effective that it creates for its followers a universe of “alternative facts” impervious to unwanted realities. Again, the testing for this is very far advanced.

I'd say his 40% are definitely fanatically committed.

As a country, except for the Civil War, I don't know if we've ever been as divided. My husband has maintained that the 60s were worse, but he's starting to change his mind as see realizes just how right wing batshit the GOP has gone.

I still think the biggest mistake the dems/left made was ignoring hate radio for almost four decades. They still do. Hate radio is why we have Americans wearing tee shirts that read "I'd rather be a Russian than a Democrat."

That was NOT going to happen in the 60s.

Also, because at present, almost NOBODY is paying attention to what is happening !!!!
I blame it on 'cell phones.'

I first became 'politically aware,' if I can actually call it that, WHEN RAYGUN was elected.

There was an interesting article about the right wing echo chamber that the left doesn't have. It stated that when leftist conspiracy stories get started, they get discussed in the main stream media & debunked, but the right wing conspiracy stories just echo around in their rw chamber & gain strength among those who read/listen to it. When you hear some of their shit, like HRC was running a pedophilia ring out of the basement of a pizza shop, or George Soros is paying protesters, you understand why the MSM doesn't touch it. I have a rwnj cousin & it's scary what he believes. And his hate for "libs" is shocking & permeates a lot of his social media. I unfriended him quite some time ago.

Trump shouts loudly and carries a tiny stick. Despite "Fire and Fury" bluster the outcome was lovey-dovey Valentines to and from Kim, along with an unconditional cessation of U.S. / South Korea military exercises, lack of progress on a no-nukes deal notwithstanding. Venezuela was a bluff. And now this. The pattern of behavior in in place, and his credibility is a global ZERO to friends and foes alike.

“As a Christian, I certainly believe that’s possible,” Mr. Pompeo said, noting with pride “the work that our administration’s done, to make sure that this democracy in the Middle East, that this Jewish state, remains. I am confident that the Lord is at work here.”

One month after starting his job in April 2018, Mr. Pompeo worked with Mr. Trump to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal. And he went much further: He announced 12 demands that Iran would have to meet before the United States considered lifting renewed sanctions. Mr. Pompeo has a grand goal of undermining what he calls Iran’s “expansionist foreign policy” — a mission that Mr. Trump never mentions. Iranian leaders see meeting the 12 demands as tantamount to regime suicide, analysts say.

“Most of them are unacceptable to the Iranians,” said R. Nicholas Burns, the top career State Department official under President George W. Bush. “As a result, we’ve had zero contact with them and no ability to influence their behavior.”

My first thought was who wrote his little speech and taught him 2 new big words. I am not sure anyone is left in WH who could spell "proportionate" and "obliterate".

I decided it must have been Ivanka. Trump would not have had the patience to practice pronouncing those big words probably 50 times for anyone but Ivanka. If you listen very closely he is pronouncing "proportionate" like a 5th grader reading from a book and struggling with that new big word.
