The US focus has been on the "big deal" top down approach, with a view toward public relations and domestic political consumption. Thae Yong Ho, the well known diplomatic defector from North Korea believes that Xi may have a proposal to transmit to the US at the upcoming G20 meeting in Osaka. Thae has been emphasizing that Trump's focus is using the possibility of a third summit with Kim Jong Un as an election campaign strategy.

That Donnie is privately proposing opening up NK for business. That he will look the other way in regards to NK internal human rights standards, if Kim will approve a big international Trump resort, that will attract all those celebrities Kim loves on those private beaches. Hinted at in that first strange video he made for Kim for their first meeting. And framing it to show how that opening up of NK will bring in millions of tourism dollars, and also help to quash the bad reputation and image of Kim to the world.

This is what I suggest, Mr. President – let us stop talking about the wall. I have recognized the right of any government to protect its borders as it deems necessary and convenient. But my position has been and will continue to be very firm saying that Mexico cannot pay for that wall.

TRUMP
But you cannot say that to the press. The press is going to go with that and I cannot live with that. You cannot say that to the press because I cannot negotiate under those circumstances.[link:https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/politics/australia-mexico-transcripts/|
