6 hrs. ago. Right-wing militia groups across the Pacific Northwest are mobilizing to prevent Oregon state police from arresting Republican state senators who went into hiding on Thursday in order to prevent climate change legislation from passing.
All eleven of Oregon's Republican state senators are currently on-the-lam, with some leaving for Idaho in an effort to deny the Democrat-controlled state senate a quorum to pass a cap-and-trade bill. In response, Oregon Governor Kate Brown (D), citing a provision in the state constitution that allows the state to "compel" absent lawmakers to attend legislative sessions, dispatched state troopers to bring them back.
One of the lawmakers on the lam, Republican Brian Boquist (R), warned that he would resort to violence rather than return to the state, implying in a local television interview that he would attack law enforcement officers sent to retrieve him. "Send bachelors and come heavily armed," Boquist said. "I'm not going to be a political prisoner in the state of Oregon. It's just that simple."
Militia groups in the Pacific Northwest--a hotbed of far-right extremist activist--claim they've mobilized to protect those state senators. "We're doing what we can to make sure that they're safe and comfortable," said Eric Parker, the president of militia group Real Three Percenters Idaho, said the Idaho militias are in touch with their Oregon counterparts about the senators. - MORE...

- Efforts to scuttle the cap-and-trade legislation have taken a remarkable and potentially dark turn.- An Oregon militia movement source told The Daily Beast: members were "willing to put their own lives in front of these senators' lives," dozens of armed members have "mobilized" to protect the state senators, there is potential for violence if authorities try to bring back the senators, and the groups would defend the Republicans "at any cost." "All of them are armed," he said.
Groups that have joined: the III%ers, the Oath Keepers, and independent militia groups from out of state. The III%ers are named for their belief that only 3% of colonists were involved in the American Revolution. Oath Keepers are named for veterans and law enforcement officers who have vowed not to violate their "oaths."

Those opposed to the cap-and-trade plan say it would exacerbate a growing divide between the liberal, urban parts of the state and the rural areas. The plan would increase the cost of fuel, damaging small business, truckers and the logging industry, they say. Democrats say the measure is an efficient way to lower emissions while investing in low-income and rural communities' ability to adapt to climate change. It has the support of environmental groups, farmworkers and some trade unions.
Republicans aren't just holding up a climate plan, but a significant portion of the state budget including funding for the state's health care, foster care and higher education agencies.

(1,480 posts)this tactic has been deployed by Democrats as well. If you don't have the power to stop legislation, this reaction seems to be the norm in regards to avoiding a vote.
Let them run.
We need to get the people on our side. Then stuff like this won't matter.

(41,114 posts)> "This isnt the first time state lawmakers of either party have fled their states to deny their rivals a quorum. In 2003, Texas Democrats left the state to avoid a vote on redistricting legislation, while Democratic lawmakers in Wisconsin fled in 2011 to block Republican cuts to union rights.
> But what makes the current standoff in Oregon unique is the offers of help from militiasand the threats by at least one of those lawmakers to shoot police himself." (The Daily Beast).

(16,070 posts)Did not threaten the use of violence and deadly force...also I don't recall that Democrats received the support of groups that are mainly composed of white nationalists...so it isn't the same thing!!!
And if you can't see the difference...then you have problems!!!

(2,745 posts)Its their constituents.
When Republicans sent law enforcement officers after Democratic legislators in Texas, Democratic constituents didnt threaten anyone.
Republicans, both politicians and their constituents, are becoming increasingly lawless. Law enforcement is either intimidated by them, supportive of them, or feel powerless to go after them. So they withhold details about criminal acts from the public - especially about the perpetrators extremist views.
After closer inspection . . . I see that one Senator actually HAS threatenedlaw enforcement.

(14,951 posts)then I guess I will reserve all of my sympathy for the state agents of violence who have to deal with the psychological and physical aftermath of doing their job and I will have nothing left over for your dumb ass...
If you were to have a coherent fact-based philosophical/intellectual basis for your position, I would feel differently (perhaps entirely oppositely), but you don't, so I don't. Get wrecked, idiots.

(15,805 posts)they look? Denying climate change and pretending it has effects will not make it go away. Republicans really are the Stupid Party, they deny science and math and cling to insanely convoluted conspiracy theories that shore up their ignorance.
Now milquetoast Republicans have tossed in a dash of Ramboesque bravado to paint a cartoonist vision of themselves as paper tigers. The costumes and tough talk will sputter out the minute they find themselves facing armed police. In addition to their handcuffs and weapons, the police might want to bring the senators a box of Depends.

June 22 (UPI) -- The Oregon state senate canceled its Saturday session over concerns that armed militia groups could gather outside the capital and threaten lawmakers.
The Oregon GOP Twitter account said "Democrats canceled their weekend session citing a fear that Republican voters may show up."
This comes two days after Republicans walked out of the legislature in protest of a cap and trade bill that would reduce greenhouse gases, eliminate the use of fossil fuels and require other climate-related changes.
Oregon State Police and partner agencies "are planning accordingly," Oregon State Police Capt. Tim Fox said.
