HONOLULU (AP) The U.S. Navy will christen a new guided missile destroyer, the USS Daniel Inouye, during a ceremony in Maine.
U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii will speak at Saturday's ceremony in Bath, Maine. Inouye's widow, Irene Hirano Inouye, will be the ship's sponsor.
The Arleigh Burke-class ship is being named after the war hero and politician who broke racial barriers in Congress.
Inouye represented Hawaii in the U.S. Senate for a half-century until his death in 2012.

(1,003 posts)who was in an internment camp, like Daniel Inouye.
I remember asking him how he could be a Democrat, after what Roosevelt and Executive Order 9066 did to him and our families.
He said, "If Daniel Inouye could forgive the Democrats for all that and run as one of them, I suppose I could forgive them too."
Another thing, he was a Territorial Rep before Hawaiian statehood, and he was one of the first elected Congressional reps when Hawaii was granted statehood. Think of it, he represented Hawaii continually, from before statehood until his death in 2012.

(160,524 posts)It was great learning how he affected your family's lives, as well.
Listened for years to the times they did the Senate Roll Call, and hearing his name called out, Inouye. It definitely seems like a permanent part of the U.S. Senate. I think everyone respected him there.
So glad to see your comments, jrandom421. Thank you.
