Suspension of preferential trade status for India under GSP is 'done deal': Trump

Source: Business Today

The Trump administration has said it is not going back on its decision to terminate India's designation as a beneficiary developing nation under the key GSP trade programme, terming the suspension a "done deal".

The Generalized System of Preference (GSP) is the largest and oldest US trade preference programme and is designed to promote economic development by allowing duty-free entry for thousands of products from designated beneficiary countries.

On March 4, President Donald Trump announced that the US intended to terminate India's designation as a beneficiary developing country under the GSP programme.

Under the GSP programme, nearly 2,000 products including auto components and textile materials can enter the US duty-free if the beneficiary developing countries meet the eligibility criteria established by Congress.

They have a really solid business based on clothing blanks, dyes, and yarns. And that's just one business I can think of that will probably be collateral damage in today's Trump tantrum fantasy wars.

Things like analyzing X-Rays in the middle of the night, coding tens of millions of medical forms, computer programming and a whole pile of technical services -- just off the top of my head.

Complain as you might about the accent of a tech support person on the phone, but if they weren't there, there probably wouldn't be anyone to answer the phone nowadays. Or they'd be a (worse) idiot.

An accent is not an indication of citizenship! It may give you a clue as to national/regional origin, but that's it. Years back I worked with a guy from Niger named Kennedy. He was legit one of the nicest, kindest people I've ever had the pleasure to know, and he taught me a lot about Niger in particular and Africa in general. He had an accent, and customers complained about it with depressing regularity, and it really hurt him. I told him to just transfer those calls to me if it happened while I was there.

If I'm unable to understand someone because of an accent, I politely ask if there's someone else I can speak with. There's no need to be a jackass about it, but people do it all the damn time.

I wonder if those are now exempted and if so, would the exemption now be voided?......

Very disturbing read for me and I hope our Democratic leaders in Congress will eventually address this serious problem.

Another consequence of elections and Republican deregulation and budget cuts. It will only get worse during tRump's time.

I find it highly unlikely that it's all coming from Trump. Who benefits the most from the U.S. being at odds with its major trading partners? Just Putin that out there.

I don't think people realize how much Russia coveted influence over India, even back to the days of Stalin.
