U.S. issues warning on airspace near Gulf as Iran tensions simmer

(Reuters) - The Federal Aviation Administration has issued an advisory to U.S. commercial airliners flying over the waters of the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman to exercise caution as tensions between Washington and Tehran continue to simmer.
The advisory, issued by the FAA on Thursday and circulated late on Friday, said the warning came amidst heightened military activities and increased political tensions in the region which present an increasing inadvertent risk to U.S. civil aviation operations due to the potential for miscalculation or mis-identification...

How are commercial airliners going to exercise caution? Don't they follow flight paths?

(779 posts)When the US government was playing tensions with Iran and the US ship shot down an airliner with about 300 people, lots of children,
many foreign nationals, everyone blown up. We created a major disaster then, and now we have a bigger disaster in the White House.

(101,314 posts)On 3 July 1988, the USS Vincennes chased Iranian speedboats, which allegedly opened fire on a helicopter, into Iranian territorial waters. The US ship then mistook an Iran Air plane heading to Dubai for an Iranian F-14. The Vincennes fired two missiles, killing all 290 people onboard the flight.

290 civilians killed, and Iran didn't use it as an excuse for war. Imagine what a western country would have done to Iran if it had happened the other way round,

big surprise...
Lots of airlines have been shot down with no resulting war, like El Al Flight 402, Libyan Arab Airlines Flight 114, Korean Air Lines Flight 007 and most recently Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.
