(Reuters) - Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams, a rising Democratic Party star who narrowly fell short of becoming the first female black U.S. governor, said on Tuesday she would not run for the U.S. Senate in 2020 because it was not the best role for her.
The fights to be waged require a deep commitment to the job and I do not see the U.S. Senate as the best role for me in this battle for our nations future, Abrams said in a video posted on Twitter, adding she would work to ensure the state elected a Democrat to the seat.
Abrams stands at the forefront of a diverse and younger generation of Democratic Party leaders catapulted onto the national stage in last years midterm elections, and has been discussed as a possible 2020 White House candidate.
Her profile continued to climb when party officials picked her in February to deliver their response to Republican President Donald Trumps State of the Union speech.

(6,044 posts)We don't have a deep bench in GA. We need to take back the Senate in 2020. Is there any other candidate for us GA besides Abrams?

(15 posts)More than one candidate could ask her to be VP, which she deserves.
We'll see.

(25,183 posts)Unless things change dramatically, we will probably have a white male as the nominee, and he will need a woman of color to balance things out. Sen. Harris might be considered, but if hard feelings have come between her supporters and supporters of the eventual nominee as a result of things said on the campaign trail, that might make it difficult for her to get picked for the VP slot.
If I were advising Stacy Abrams, I would say that she stands a better chance of being picked as VP than she has of winning the US Senate seat from Georgia.

(13,082 posts)She said she is open to all options. I hope she will at least entertain the idea if he does ask her to run on his ticket. That and for any office he appoints her to once he's taken the office of POTUS .

(6,881 posts)If not Senate, shortest path to presidency, seems not to be directly political. And that would be too bad.

(182 posts)who served 8 years as mayor of Columbus Ga. will be running against David Purdue. Ms. Abrams will more than likely get a cabinet position with the new Democratic Administration in 2021 and then go back after Governor Brian Kemp in 2022.

(86,987 posts)She has expressed disinterest in VP role as well. Cabinet appointment would be awesome, she could do a lot there. She has a path and she knows what that path is regardless of what we perceive. She is a true public servant and will continue to be one both on and off camera, I have no doubt she will go where she will do the most good, if we let her/vote for her when she runs for an office.

Too bad, I think she'd be a perfect fit for the US Senate.
