Defense funds being used for Arizona, New Mexico border wall

Source: Associated Press

Apr 23, 2019 Updated 11 hrs ago

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — The U.S. government is moving forward with plans to use military funds to build border barriers in Arizona and New Mexico.

The Department of Homeland Security issued waivers to environmental laws last week to build and replace 46 miles (74 kilometers) of barriers near Columbus, New Mexico, and 11 miles (17 kilometers) near Yuma, Arizona.

The barriers are being funded by the Department of Defense following President Donald Trump's emergency declaration in February.

Last month, the federal government announced it had awarded contracts of nearly $1 billion to replace short barriers with tall fences in those areas.

1. I live in New Mexico, and we here tend to think

that a wall is complete and utter bullshit.

Oh, and those of us who live in sanctuary cities think that sending us refugees is just fine.

One casual acquaintance of mine (I only know him through Geeks Who Drink in my city) is planning to drive supplies for immigrants to a city in the southern part of this state. Although it looks like we'll be accepting refugees who will need supplies here.

I also do volunteer work at our local homeless shelter. I work with one particular faith group -- I don't happen to be a member of that faith group, but friends of mine who are got me involved. Actually, it wasn't very hard to persuade me to help. It's the kind of thing I wanted to do, and is largely done by faith groups. Since I'm not at all religious, I had no other outlet for my inclination. It was genuinely wonderful when they approached me about this. Yes! I could do what I wanted to do.

What was really charming was when my friends first approached me. They were very circumspect, and truly beat around the bush. "We have a question, but you don't really have to do it, but maybe you'd like to join us. . ." it went on like that. I said,"What in the world do you want?" They, somewhat shamefacedly, said, "Oh. Our church has this hot water ministry in the summer, and perhaps you'd like to help." The church in question had a couple of showers and had for several years at that point done what they called their hot water ministry, which consisted of a hot lunch, showers for as many as they could accommodate in the time involved, and what the called a community closet, a clothing exchange.

Well, I loved it. I learned to really like the kitchen in that church. And I think the most important thing I learned was how very hungry homeless people are. I was astonished at how much they ate. Over time I've learned that such hunger is normal.

Since then that specific church no longer does the hot water ministry, but we do a volunteer stint at the local homeless shelter.

I know I can't solve the problems of the homeless, but at least I can attempt to give them enough food.

I genuinely love doing this. I've gotten good at fixing food for large groups. It is giant fun so far as I am concerned. And more than once I've been terrified that we will run out of food before the night is out. That has never happened (praise whatever seems appropriate) and I take a lot of personal pride in our feeding of the homeless.

I cannot begin to imagine what it is like, even though I see these people in front of me when I work the homeless shelter.

I have been poor, and I have been hungry. In the early 1960s I got dental work through a local Catholic charity organization. For some years after, when I participated in a charity fundraising, I designated my contribution to that particular organization.

Anyway, I've been on both sides. A recipient of charity, which I vastly appreciated. And as someone who can help out, which is incredibly gratifying.

I can only hope that those who read this will be moved to do something similar in their community.

3. AZ here. Using my own time and money I prepare and deliver food boxes and toiletries to the homeles

on the street. I have been close to homeless at one time in my life but never as destitute as the street homeless. On Easter some of the homeless recognized me from a prior time of handing out food boxes, etc. I have never felt afraid. In fact, when I pulled off to the side of the road to distribute a box to the homeless person on the other side of the street he came over and the first thing he asked was if I needed some help. He thought I was having car trouble. I take my GS with me (wherever I go) and his friendly presence evokes childhood memories of their pets and gives them some pleasant feelings. On a funny note: a group of four large men I had stopped to serve, after ascertaining what I was there for, opened up the passenger side car door only to be greeted by my 120 lb. GS! He quickly shut the door. However, I let the dog run while serving and chatting so he recognized he didn't need to be afraid. This Easter some of the homeless because they recognized me, allowed me to enter their messaging underground. It was amazing how they've been forced to adapt to communicate with each other. I was told that the police had been through earlier that morning and took away some of the homeless but they told me where they were hiding.

I started doing this on my own when I realized that no charity feeds on Christmas (like they do on Thanksgiving.)

I will continue and expand what I am doing for the homeless, but my emphasis is on charitable contributions to animal rescues here and worldwide. I have nothing to do with people who don't selflessly help others.

5. Even though you might not believe me, you're doing soul work. Soul isn't governed by religion.

Keep on helping...come to think of it, helping is your personal religion!

any more increases in funding if it has money to give away. Congress needs to cut the next Pentagon budget.

4. Also, why didn't he just ask for ONE BILLION if that's what it costs?

He wanted 25 BILLION at once - and more. Various different amounts. He'd probably have gotten 1B with nobody batting an eyelash if he'd framed it as "maintenance, repair, and some new stretches of fencing." No: "BIG BEAUTIFUL BRICK WALL FROM SEA TO SHINING SEA THAT MEXICO IS GOING TO PAY FOR," and then Mexico wouldn't so of course we gotta cover his bravado to save face with the redcaps so he could say he still "GOT HIS BIG BEAUTIFUL BRICK WALL..."

I'm sure part of it is he wanted the Democrats to oppose him so he'd have another recap-rally yowling point.

"I GOT MY BIG BEAUTIFUL WALL THE DEMOCRATS DIDN'T WANT US TO HAVE"
