House Speaker Nancy Pelosi Says Impeachment Would Be Divisive But Is Not Off the Table
Source: Time
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi maintained that impeaching President Donald Trump would be incredibly divisive for the country while speaking at the first annual TIME 100 Summit on Tuesday in New York City. But she also said it wasnt off the table.
The Russians had a systemic overall assault on our electoral system and what we also did see is that the President of the United States engaged in behavior that was unethical, unscrupulous and beneath the dignity of the office that he holds, she said. Whats surprising about it is that the Republicans seem to have an unlimited appetite for that kind of behavior. Instead of being ashamed of what that report said, they gave their blessing once again to the President.
[Impeachment is] one of the most divisive paths we could go down in our country, but if the path of fact-finding takes us there, we have no choice, the California Democrat and 2019 TIME 100 honoree added a bit later. Were not there yet.
On the question of whether Trumps actions were criminal, Pelosi responded that it remains to be seen after Congress can see the rest of the report, sans redactions. She also reiterated previous statements that she and fellow Democrats were not interested in seeing less-redacted versions in secure rooms a few legislators at a time.

(349 posts)She's moved from "He's not worth it" to "If the facts lead us there" to "It would be incredibly divisive" but we may have to do it for the good of the country.
I think she knows exactly what she's doing. Instead of looking overeager to impeach, Dems will now be reluctantly forced to act to uphold the Constitution.
That said, I'd like to see her move faster!

(4,575 posts)they can be forced to remove him before he does irreparable harm to our democracy. As it is once we're rid of him we're going to have to figure out how to defend ourselves from Russia and to a lesser extent Saudi Arabia after giving them free reign with our intelligence. It's mind boggling.

(26,273 posts)but that is not a valid enough reason not to proceed with impeachment if the evidence justifies it.
Besides even if the Senate does not convict him we can still use it by tying it like an anchor around the neck of every Repugnant that is running for office by painting them as a party of corruption that is against the Constitution and the rule of law which they are.

(17,276 posts)Don't talk, just act when the time is right. What is the point of blabbing like Trump does about every thought that crosses his mind?
When there is enough investigating and public outcry, she won't fail to do the right thing.
What is really crucial to me is that he doesn't win a second term. This has to be orchestrated primarily to prevent that! So however she wants to do it is fine with me. She's the master politician.
The pain of defeat will be enough in itself to punish him, and impeachment or not is secondary to that. I don't really want a President Pence who can pardon the Dolt, but if that's the only way to begin mending the nation, so be it.

(6,582 posts)Public support is key. We need to hold hearings & call witnesses & lay out Trump's crimes in detail to the public, then move forward with impeachment.

(1,752 posts)we know by now that if the repubs don't have anything REAL to rail against, they'll just make up stuff?????
Where's the divisiveness coming from hmmmmm????
President is not above the law. The law in place most applicable is.... impeachment. Which BTW is the factfinding and coming up with charges. That's all it is. It doesn't mean removal necessarily. If the Repubs control Senate then of course they will not vote to remove.
BUT THATS NO REASON FOR THE HOUSE TO NOT DO ITS JOB..... WHICH IS THE FACT FINDING, and leveling of charges if warranted.
Yes, IM SHOUTING! Maybe someone will hear if I raise my voice LOL
