UPDATE: U.S. to impose sanctions on allies in drive to push Iran oil sales to zero

Last edited Mon Apr 22, 2019, 10:15 AM - Edit history (1)

Source: Washington Post

The Trump administration said Monday it will start imposing sanctions on some key U.S. allies unless they stop buying all oil from Iran after waivers expire next month.

“If you don’t abide by this, there will be sanctions,” said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in announcing an end to waivers granted last year to eight countries and jurisdictions that rely heavily on Iranian oil. “This is what we’re laying out this morning. We have a requirement. To conduct these transactions, one almost always needs to participate in financial markets. We intend the enforce the sanctions.”

The waiver decision came after oil prices have already risen by a third this year, and threatens to take more than a million barrels a day off the market. In anticipation of the move, crude oil prices rose 3 percent overnight. “This decision is intended to bring Iran’s oil exports to zero, denying the regime its principal source of revenue,” said a statement from the White House. It said the United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates would ensure global demand is met. Pompeo said Iran had been taking in $50 billion a year in oil revenue before the sanctions were reimposed. He estimated U.S. sanctions have cost the Islamic Republic $10 billion so far.

"The regime would have used that money to support terror groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, and continue with its missile development in defiance of U.N. Security Council resolution 2231," he told reporters. "And it would have perpetuated a humanitarian crisis in Yemen."

I had noticed the Dow futures were up earlier pre-open, and then the Dow opened and immediately fell 41 points (and now we see this statement). As it is, the gas prices have been going up anyway - partly due to the "summer blend" and partly due to crude moving higher. Sigh...

in May.

However, six-month waivers from economic penalties were granted to the eight main buyers of Iranian crude - China, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Turkey, Italy and Greece - to give them time to find alternative sources and avoid causing a shock to global oil markets.

Three of the eight buyers - Greece, Italy and Taiwan - have stopped importing Iranian oil. But the others had reportedly asked for their waivers to be extended.
...
The price of global benchmark Brent crude rose by 2.6% to $73.87 a barrel on Monday, after earlier hitting $74.31 - the highest since November.

They’re bad guys. They are the $$$$ behind most of the terrorism around the world.

Yeah, paying an extra buck for gas sucks — but with global warming going on, people need to drive less anyway.

Just because it’s trump, doesn’t mean the decision isn’t right. Usually, yeah.

But we’ve got a stopped watch situation going on.

Lots of countries are really bad.

Heck, China is putting Muslims in concentration camps.

Turkey is turning into a religious empire and its leader things he is the Sultan reborn.

But what does any of that have to do with Iran being bad?

Any other evils you desire to disregard because of other evils?

In fact, it is because they identified Iran as a bad guy, that they worked so hard to preclude Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. Remember that your hero, Bibi Netanyahu constantly made the point that they were months (as low as 2) from having one.

The Iran nuclear deal very publicly addressed JUST getting a nuclear weapon. Many sanctions levied for other reasons by the US remained in effect. The stated reason was that a comprehensive solution was not then in the cards. As it was, it was dificult to get the nuclear deal we did -- where Secretary Moniz, an MIT professor of nuclear energy, led in developing the monitoring program. Even Israel's military and intelligence agreed that it was better for Israel because it meant that Iran would not suddenly get a nuclear weapon.

Yes, I know it is unpopular with Israel and that BiBi fought it as hard as he could. In retrospect, that was not because he genuinely believed that did not effectively make it much less likely for Iran to get a nuclear weapon, but because it made war against Iran less likely. It is pretty well documented that before 2015, BiBi wanted to bomb Iran ... and even better if it was the US that did so.

As it was, while Obama was President, it was Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States that blew up every ceasefire the UN or US tried to get on Yemen. Iran actually cooperated. The MAIN source of Islamic violence - including AQ and ISIS - comes out of the extreme form of the Sunni branch of Islam.

Oil spikes to 6-month high after Trump crackdown on Iran

https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/440065-oil-spikes-to-6-month-high-after-trump-crackdown-on-iran

By Niv Elis - 04/22/19 04:04 PM EDT

Oil prices on Monday spiked to their highest levels since October after President Trump announced the U.S. would not renew sanction waivers that had allowed eight countries to buy Iranian oil.

Brent crude rocketed past $74 a barrel, its highest point this year, and American consumers may soon see the price increase at gas stations nationwide.

The administration's move was designed to ratchet up pressure on Iran almost a year after Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated by former President Obama.

After reimposing oil sanctions in November, the U.S. agreed to grant waivers allowing eight countries to continue buying Iranian oil: China, India, Japan, Turkey, Italy, Greece, South Korea and Taiwan.

The White House said Monday it had struck agreements with oil-producing allies like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates "to take timely action to assure that global demand is met as all Iranian oil is removed from the market.”

Iran responded by threatening to close the Strait of Hormuz, which would affect the transport of oil, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency..............................
