A horrific shooting at a Christchurch mosque was livestreamed for 17 minutes by the gunman.

The livestream began as the gunman drove to the Al Noor Mosque in Deans Ave, parking his car in a nearby driveway.

The beige stationwagon contains a cache of weapons and ammunition in the front passenger seat and boot, along with petrol cannisters.

Just watched her briefing on MSNBC - she is a leader with nothing to hide, completely honest, not trying to campaign, possessing vision of what should happen next and what citizens can do right now without suggesting doing stupid crap. Fearless, but appropriately cautious. She denounced the terrible acts as right wing extremism that has no place...if non muslims in the community want to do something, show members of the muslim community, support and compassion...after healing, this will be put behind us, and those who want to practice their religion can return to the mosques to again practice it. The live stream has been popping up on Youtube, but doesn't last long before it is yanked by Youtube for violent and graphic content. I found one that is 16 min long and yes, it's horrific. Really really horrific. It will haunt me, I'm certain.

He also shot a poor woman on the sidewalk who was probably just arriving for the Friday services. She may have been the last of many, but it was particularly disturbing. He shot her first from about 20 feet away, she fell at the curb, and then he walked briskly up to her, listened to her cries for help, and finished her off.

New Zealand has much less strict gun laws than Australia, despite various attempts in recent times to toughen the laws. The shooter's guns were all legally purchased. Various groups, including the police, in particular, have tried to push for universal registration and reclassification of certain rifles, such as AR-15 style ones, from the current 'A' category to the more restricted 'E' category (military-style semi-automatics). These attempts have failed due to high court challenges made by the NZ equivalent of the NRA, the New Zealand National Shooters Association.

'A' category rifles are limited to only 7 rounds, but it looks like the shooter was able to simply use a higher capacity magazine to turn his 'A' category rifle into a more restricted 'E' category one. This is considered a loophole in the law, which some say have been put in deliberately by the gun lobby, which "helped" to write the current laws. More information here:

It says something that this Australian guy couldn't do what he did in his own country because of the tough gun laws here (I'm Australian), so he had to choose another country to act out his evil fantasies. Hospital urges people not to visit patients

Christchurch Hospital has issued a statement confirming it's treating 48 patients for gunshot wounds "ranging from young children to adults".

"Unless it’s essential, we ask that people don’t come to visit patients," said David Meates, chief executive of Canterbury District Health Board. There are already 200 relatives on site.

To help the hospital cope, women who are due to give birth have been asked to go to local maternity units if they can.
