South Dakota governor says Trump trade wars have 'devastated' the state
Source: Politico
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem said Friday that President Donald Trumps trade wars have devastated her state, and though she agreed that countries like China were not following fair trade practices, she urged the Trump administration to quickly wrap up its trade talks there.
South Dakota has been devastated by the trade wars that are going on, Noem said at POLITICOs State Solutions Conference, noting that agriculture is by far the largest industry in the state. The Republican governor warned that the trade woes of farmers can trickle down to the rest of the state, impacting every main street business, everybody that has another entity out there that relies on a successful ag industry.
President Donald Trump has engaged in a tit-for-tat war with U.S. trade partners like China and the European Union, who have levied retaliatory tariffs on major U.S. commodities like soybeans and wheat. The White House has been in talks with China for months over the issue, and faces a self-imposed deadline of next Friday to reach an agreement before tariff rates increase drastically.
Noem allowed that countries like China had engaged in unfair trade practices and said she realized the Trump administration is trying to rectify that, but said the clash had gone on too long.

(47,285 posts)Being there aren't that many people in South Dakota, anything that affects their farmers is bound to trickle down to other businesses as well. It wouldn't take much to devastate South Dakota's economy.
There isn't much that Trump can't destroy if he just puts his mind to it.

(2,163 posts)of South Dakota from legalizing industrial hemp production in the state. An AWESOME revenue source and perfect place to grow it. She is ignorantly arguing it opens the door to the slippery slope of marijuana legalization. Not even the same species of plant (aside from the fact there is nothing wrong with legalizing marijuana).
They deserve everything they get!

(423 posts)Kentucky, a firmly red state, has had legalized hemp production for years without any kind of slippery slope nonsense happening.
Also, just to set the record straight, hemp is produced primarily from male Cannabis plants so it's absolutely the same species, just different genders.

(2,163 posts)Due to almost a century of misinformation about Cannabis, the distinction between Cannabis and its two primary species hemp and marijuana has become unclear to the many and some even consider the three plants to be one in the same. Because of this, the three terms are often used interchangeably, which has created difficulties when understanding the usage and benefits of Hemp vs Marijuana and Cannabis in general.

(2,041 posts)Second, it's all Cannabis, just bred for different characteristics.
Hemp would be an excellent alternative for the farmers who have lost markets, let's talk about that instead.

(22,077 posts)have, but because Noem and others like her seemingly supported rump and his garbage politics (no rationale what-so-ever in doing any of the stuff rump has done, e.g., tariffs, etc.), Noem and her ilk are part of the problem that causing this whole situation when it should have never happened (it didn't need to).
Seems like we're getting the end of the stick (farmers, consumers, all Americans) and not the ones that rump is supposedly going after. Sure trade practices may have some fine tuning to do, as they always seem to need in years past. But that's part of life, you don't just shut everything down as rump did, nor raise / impose tariffs arbitrarily as rump did.
Now, the ripple effects of what's happening in S. Dakota is going to replicate itself in other wheat/corn growing states thus impacting their economies and causing further pressure on the economy in sustaining the growth that came about from rationale policies that Barak O installed after the big crash in 2008. Farmers will buy less equipment (can't afford it if they can't sell their produce) and thus will be under pressure and thus, foreclosures will increase too. Prices will increase across the board for consumers as less produce makes it to market when more and more farmers go bankrupt. Etc.
When can we NOT stopping winning with this idiotic administration?
